La Liga: Anthony Gordon marks Barcelona debut with two assists against Elche – BBC

Anthony Gordon did not merely make his Barcelona debut on Saturday—he announced himself to Camp Nou with a performance that could shape the club’s attacking future. The winger, signed from Newcastle United in the January transfer window, set up two goals as Barcelona beat Elche 4-1 at the Olympic Stadium. His assists, both delivered with precision, underscored why Xavi Hernández has already trusted him in a competitive starting lineup.

Why Gordon’s arrival matters now

Barcelona’s midfield reconstruction has been a priority since the club’s financial constraints forced a clearout of high-earners. Gordon’s arrival for a reported £35 million fee was not just a statement of intent but a calculated gamble on a player with Premier League pedigree and direct, progressive qualities. His ability to pin defenders and deliver crosses from the left flank offers a dimension that has been missing since Ousmane Dembélé’s departure.

Elche, rooted to the bottom of the table, provided the ideal backdrop for Gordon’s introduction. Barcelona dominated possession and territory, and Gordon’s first assist came in the 34th minute when his driven cross was met by Robert Lewandowski, who headed in from close range. The second, in the 54th minute, was a low delivery to Frenkie de Jong, who tapped in at the near post. Both goals stemmed from Gordon’s willingness to take on defenders and deliver under pressure—traits that have endeared him to Xavi’s system.

What the result reveals about Barcelona’s direction

Beyond the scoreline, the match exposed both the progress and the remaining gaps in Barcelona’s squad. The win extended their unbeaten run to five games in all competitions, but the manner of victory suggested that Xavi’s side is still finding its rhythm. João Félix, playing as a false nine, showed flashes of creativity but also struggled to link play effectively. Meanwhile, Raphinha, deployed on the right, offered width but lacked the cutting edge seen from Gordon on the opposite flank.

Defensively, Barcelona’s high line was exposed at times, particularly when Elche’s lone striker, Lucas Boyé, found pockets of space. Andreas Christensen and Jules Koundé were caught out on the counter, and goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen made a crucial save from a Boyé one-on-one in the 68th minute. The concession of a consolation goal in the 78th minute—scored by Pere Milla—highlighted the fragility that persists despite the attacking improvements.

What comes next for Gordon and Barcelona

Gordon’s performance will intensify scrutiny over his long-term role. With Raphinha, Lamine Yamal, and Ansu Fati all vying for minutes on the wings, competition for places is fierce. However, his direct style and willingness to track back defensively could see him become a regular in Xavi’s preferred 4-3-3 system. The next test comes against Real Sociedad on Wednesday in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals, where a similar display could secure his place in the starting XI.

For Barcelona, the challenge is clear: balance ambition with pragmatism. The club’s financial constraints mean every signing must deliver immediate impact, and Gordon’s debut suggests he can be part of that solution. Yet the defensive lapses against Elche serve as a reminder that Xavi’s side still has work to do before it can challenge for the title. With Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid breathing down their necks, Barcelona cannot afford to rely solely on attacking flair—they need defensive solidity as urgently as they need creativity.

Gordon’s Barcelona career is off to a promising start, but the road ahead will demand more than just two assists. The coming weeks will determine whether his arrival is a turning point or merely a footnote in a season of transition.
