Liverpool 2-3 Monaco: Reds throw away lead as Andoni Iraola beaten in first Anfield game – Sky Sports

Liverpool’s pre-season curtain-raiser at Anfield ended in familiar discomfort as Monaco overturned a two-goal deficit to win 3-2, exposing frailties that Andoni Iraola’s side cannot afford to ignore. The Reds’ first home game under the new manager was a rollercoaster that underlined the scale of the rebuild required before the Premier League curtain rises. With the transfer window still open and competitive football returning in England, the result demands immediate attention from both the dugout and the boardroom.

How the lead slipped through Liverpool’s fingers

Liverpool twice led at Anfield, only for Monaco to exploit the same defensive hesitancy that has dogged the club in recent campaigns. The visitors equalised before half-time and then took the lead for the first time in the 60th minute, moments after Mohamed Salah’s second goal had restored the Reds’ advantage. The pattern—two goals conceded in quick succession after going ahead—mirrors the fragility that has cost Liverpool points in tight matches in recent seasons. Iraola, speaking after his first defeat in charge, acknowledged the familiar issues: “Liverpool have work to do.”

Curtis Jones’ absence due to injury deprived Liverpool of a creative outlet, and the midfield struggled to control the tempo once Monaco’s pressing intensified. The visitors’ third goal, a composed finish after a swift counter, highlighted the gulf between Iraola’s ambitions and the current squad’s ability to sustain pressure. The result leaves Liverpool’s pre-season preparations in disarray ahead of a congested fixture list.

What the defeat reveals about Iraola’s project

The loss is a reality check for a club still searching for defensive solidity and midfield steel. Iraola’s assessment that Liverpool “cannot sustain their level” cuts to the heart of the problem: the Reds lack the cohesion to absorb setbacks without collapsing. The performance echoed the transitional struggles of Arne Slot’s early days, raising questions about whether the current personnel can meet the demands of Iraola’s high-pressing system. The problem Liverpool must address after Andoni Iraola’s losing Anfield bow draws Arne Slot parallels.

With the Premier League’s opening fixtures looming, the defeat underscores the urgency of addressing the defensive frailties that have blighted Liverpool’s last two seasons. Iraola’s honesty—rare in football’s echo chambers—should focus minds in the stands and the boardroom alike. The Reds cannot afford to repeat this script when competitive points are on the line.

Transfers and transfers: Araujo edges closer, but the clock ticks

Amid the on-field chaos, Liverpool’s transfer business continues apace. Ronald Araujo is on the cusp of completing a loan move from Barcelona, a deal that would address the defensive shortages exposed against Monaco. Darwin Núñez’s public welcome to his future teammate—”now you’re a red too”—hints at the camaraderie being forged before Araujo even sets foot in England. Liverpool’s new era begins with Monaco thriller as Munoz debuts at Anfield.

The window is closing, and the squad’s deficiencies are laid bare. While Araujo’s arrival offers a lifeline, the Reds’ inability to protect leads suggests deeper issues that no single signing can resolve overnight. The contrast between the club’s transfer activity and the team’s on-field fragility is stark, and the pressure on Iraola to deliver tangible progress in the coming weeks has never been greater.

Liverpool’s pre-season stumble is more than a friendly setback; it is a warning. The Reds’ defensive lapses, the midfield’s inability to dictate terms, and the squad’s thinness in key areas all demand urgent remedies. Iraola’s first Anfield defeat should serve as the catalyst for decisive action—before the Premier League’s unforgiving schedule exposes the same flaws for real. The window is shrinking, the fixtures are stacking up, and the margin for error is non-existent.
