Liverpool flop was sold after he scored own goals on purpose with team-mates fuming

Liverpool’s brief flirtation with Mario Balotelli now reads like a cautionary tale of talent wasted and locker-room harmony shattered. The Italian’s Anfield stint between 2014 and 2016 was defined not by moments of magic, but by own goals that coincided with his mood and a training-ground persona that left team-mates exasperated. His exit in January 2016—cut short by poor form and persistent issues in training—was the natural endpoint of a relationship that never recovered from his refusal to conform, on or off the pitch.

Own goals as protest, and the dressing-room fallout

Balotelli’s tendency to score own goals when his mood soured became folklore at Melwood. Former Liverpool striker Rickie Lambert, who partnered him in attack during the 2014-15 season, recalled how the Italian’s behaviour poisoned training sessions. Lambert told the Straight From the Off podcast in 2021 that Balotelli’s demeanour shifted the moment he stepped onto the training pitch: “He was a good lad, childish but infectious. But as soon as he stepped on the training pitch he became a different person.”

Lambert’s frustration peaked when he had to ask Brendan Rodgers to keep him off his training team. “I had to go in and say to Brendan, ‘Don’t put me on his team again,’” he said. “I think Stevie [Gerrard] had said the same.” The Italian’s refusal to engage fully in drills, coupled with his propensity for own goals when his mood soured, created an atmosphere that undermined even the most patient professionals. By August 2015, reports in The Standard described Balotelli’s antics as “jaw-dropping,” including a half-pitch strike that left onlookers stunned—an isolated flash of brilliance amid a season of dysfunction.

From cult figure to liability, and the swift exit

Balotelli arrived at Anfield as a marquee signing, fresh from Manchester City and Inter Milan, but his Liverpool career never ignited. Across 28 games he managed just four goals, a return that failed to justify the hype. His stint ended in January 2016 when he was loaned back to AC Milan, a move that spared Liverpool further embarrassment. The episode exposed a chasm between potential and professionalism—a gap Balotelli had no intention of bridging.

His departure underscored a wider issue: Liverpool’s inability to harness volatile personalities in an era when squad harmony was increasingly prized. Rodgers’ tenure, already under strain from the post-Suárez rebuild, never recovered from the friction Balotelli introduced. The Italian’s legacy at Anfield is not one of skill, but of disruption—a player who treated the pitch like a stage for his moods, and team-mates as unwitting extras in his theatre of the absurd.

Iraola’s midfield dilemma, and the Barcola chase

Fast-forward to 2025, and Liverpool face a different kind of headache under new manager Andoni Iraola. The Spaniard’s summer has been defined by uncertainty in midfield, a department Jamie Carragher recently labelled a “huge problem.” Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, Carragher warned that Liverpool’s midfield issues from last season remain unresolved, with space still prevalent in the engine room. The deployment of Dominik Szoboszlai in a box-to-box role alongside Ryan Gravenberch risks exacerbating the problem, he argued, leaving Iraola with a tactical conundrum before the season even begins.

Amid the midfield malaise, Liverpool’s pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola has taken centre stage. PSG’s demand for £145m has stalled negotiations, though Fabrizio Romano reported that talks remain active. With just over a week until the Premier League curtain-raiser against Newcastle United, Iraola’s window to reshape his squad is closing. The Barcola saga is more than a transfer story—it’s a test of whether Liverpool can marry ambition with pragmatism in a window where every misstep risks echoing the dysfunction of Balotelli’s era.

Balotelli’s Liverpool career was a masterclass in self-sabotage. His own goals were not accidents, but acts of defiance—a middle finger to the idea of professional consistency. That he was shipped out within two years speaks volumes about a club that, for all its history, has little patience for players who treat the game as a playground rather than a workplace. Today, as Iraola grapples with his own squad-building challenges, Liverpool’s hierarchy must remember: talent without discipline is a liability, not an asset.
