Liverpool news: Virgil van Dijk makes ‘unacceptable’ claim as club approve three transfer exits

Liverpool’s transfer window remains open with just days until their Premier League opener at Newcastle United, yet the Reds have already waved off three players and approved a fourth exit. Virgil van Dijk has publicly criticised the club’s inaction, stating that the current situation is “not good enough” as the squad’s reshuffle continues to lag behind expectations.

Three exits confirmed as deadline day looms

Liverpool have sanctioned the permanent departures of Calvin Ramsay and Ifeanyi Ndukwe, while 19-year-old forward Kieran Morrison has joined Sheffield Wednesday on a season-long loan. Morrison, who signed a new Reds contract in May and earned his first Northern Ireland cap in June, leaves Anfield despite his recent international breakthrough. Ramsay, out of contract next summer after a frustrating spell at Liverpool, is reportedly set to join St Mirren on loan, effectively ending his time at the club. Ndukwe, despite impressing in pre-season, faces work permit issues and will leave for Spanish side Levante on loan until at least January.

These exits follow the club’s approval of three permanent transfers this summer: Victor Munoz (£34.6m), Jeremy Jacquet (£60m), and Ronald Araujo on loan with a £47.1m purchase option. Yet with Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson already gone, the sense of unfinished business persists as Liverpool prepare for their first match under new manager Andoni Iraola.

Van Dijk’s demand exposes squad tension

Van Dijk, now without established partner Ibrahima Konaté following his move to Real Madrid, has publicly called for greater intensity from his teammates and the new arrivals. With Jacquet and Araujo set to compete for the starting berth alongside him, the Dutch defender’s comments underscore the pressure on Liverpool’s reshaped defence ahead of a pivotal season. Iraola, who replaced Arne Slot, will make his Premier League debut at St James’ Park on Sunday, but the Reds’ transfer activity has yet to match the scale of their squad overhaul.

The timing of van Dijk’s intervention is notable, coming as Liverpool’s window remains open until September 1. His demand for higher standards suggests unease over the club’s summer recruitment, particularly in defence, where Konaté’s departure has left a significant void. The Dutch international’s stance reflects broader concerns about the club’s ability to compete at the highest level this season.

Newcastle’s revenge plot adds spice to Anfield return

Liverpool’s trip to Newcastle is already framed as a potential revenge mission for the Magpies, who have invested heavily in their squad and infrastructure. Newcastle’s £190m training ground project, spearheaded by manager Michael Jaissle, signals their ambition to challenge for honours, while Alexander Isak’s form adds further threat. Liverpool will need more than just new signings to silence the St James’ Park crowd.

The Reds’ transfer activity has been selective rather than sweeping, with Iraola yet to address every position. The club’s focus on defensive reinforcements—Jacquet and Araujo—reflects their priorities, but the lack of a clear midfield upgrade raises questions about their long-term balance. The absence of a direct replacement for Robertson in attack further highlights the gaps in Liverpool’s recruitment.

Liverpool’s transfer business has been fragmented, with a £50m bid for Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh rejected earlier this week. The Reds’ interest in Minteh, seen as a potential Salah replacement, highlights their search for attacking firepower, but their inability to conclude deals risks leaving Iraola with an incomplete squad. The club’s failure to secure a permanent solution for the left-back position, in particular, could prove costly in tight Premier League contests.

With the Premier League curtain-raiser just days away, Liverpool’s window is running out. Van Dijk’s frustration is a symptom of a club still searching for cohesion, while Newcastle arrive as genuine contenders—not just opponents. The Reds’ transfer activity may be winding down, but the pressure on Iraola to deliver from day one has never been greater.
