Man City interested in Gakpo

Manchester City’s pursuit of Cody Gakpo has taken an unexpected turn, with Pep Guardiola’s side now monitoring the Liverpool forward as a potential replacement for outgoing attacker Savinho. The move underscores City’s willingness to revisit targets they previously passed over, while also highlighting the fluidity of this summer’s transfer market. City’s interest follows reports that Tottenham have agreed terms with Savinho in a deal worth up to £85m, while Omar Marmoush’s move to Spurs appears imminent after he was named on City’s bench for their Premier League opener against Bournemouth. The departure of Savinho has prompted City to secure a direct replacement: Allan, the Palmeiras winger, has verbally agreed to join for a fee of up to £34m.

Why Gakpo matters now

City’s interest in Gakpo arrives as Liverpool face mounting pressure to balance ambition with pragmatism. The Netherlands international remains under contract at Anfield until 2030, a detail that complicates any potential deal. Liverpool’s reluctance to sell stems from their ongoing efforts to strengthen the squad, including failed bids for PSG’s Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye, alongside rejected offers for Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh. Gakpo’s status as a starter for Liverpool—he scored in their opening Premier League win over Newcastle—adds further complication to any transfer. The Reds’ 2-2 draw at Newcastle exposed structural flaws in Andoni Iraola’s system, with Jamie Carragher questioning the role of Florian Wirtz and the suitability of the Reds’ midfield trio. The debate over Liverpool’s transfer strategy—amplified by Wirtz’s £116.5m price tag—raises questions about whether Gakpo’s potential exit would further destabilise their attack.

City’s own forward line is in flux. Savinho is set to join Tottenham in a deal worth up to £85m, while Omar Marmoush’s move to Spurs appears imminent after he was named on City’s bench for their opener against Bournemouth. The departure of Savinho has prompted City to secure a direct replacement: Allan, the Palmeiras winger, has verbally agreed to join for a fee of up to £34m. Allan’s arrival is framed as a like-for-like swap, but City’s interest in Gakpo suggests a broader tactical reassessment. The Brazilian’s ability to play as an inverted winger or false nine could offer Guardiola additional flexibility, particularly if Erling Haaland’s fitness remains a concern.

Tottenham’s role in the equation

Tottenham’s involvement complicates the picture. The north London club has already agreed terms with Savinho and is closing in on Marmoush, yet their pursuit of Gakpo remains unresolved. City’s emergence as a suitor introduces a fresh dynamic, one that could force Spurs to reassess their priorities. Tottenham’s recent fixtures—including their upcoming clash with Chelsea—may determine whether they can afford to wait or must accelerate their own recruitment. The north London side’s need for a premium forward has been evident all summer, with their inability to land targets such as Victor Osimhen and Rasmus Højlund in previous windows still fresh in the memory.

Tottenham’s pursuit of Gakpo has been well-documented, with reports suggesting they viewed the Dutchman as their primary target before Savinho’s move crystallised. The club’s willingness to pay up to £85m for Savinho indicates their financial flexibility, but the potential loss of Gakpo to a rival Premier League title contender could force a rethink. If City were to table a formal bid, Spurs may need to decide whether to prioritise Marmoush as a budget alternative or accelerate talks with other forwards.

What happens next

No club-to-club talks have occurred between City and Liverpool regarding Gakpo, leaving the door ajar for Spurs to revive their interest. Liverpool’s insistence on replacing two wide forwards before sanctioning Gakpo’s sale adds a layer of uncertainty. City, meanwhile, are proceeding with Allan’s transfer, a move that could free up funds and flexibility for a late push on Gakpo. The Brazilian’s medical and subsequent integration will be closely watched, particularly given the physical demands of the Premier League.

The coming days will reveal whether City’s interest is a serious proposition or a negotiating tactic. Liverpool’s need to balance squad-building with financial prudence may ultimately dictate Gakpo’s future. For City, the pursuit reflects a broader pattern: even after securing replacements, they remain open to upgrading key positions. For Spurs, the risk is clear—Gakpo slipping through their fingers could reshape the race for attacking talent this summer. The next 48 hours will be critical, with Liverpool’s board facing a delicate balancing act between ambition and pragmatism.

One thing is certain: the transfer window’s volatility ensures that Gakpo’s future remains far from settled. Whether Liverpool can resist the temptation to sell—or whether City’s patience extends beyond the initial probe—will define the next phase of this saga. For now, the focus shifts to Liverpool’s midfield crisis and Tottenham’s next move, with all three clubs acutely aware that the next transfer domino could fall at any moment.
