Man City latest: Talks ongoing for Bouaddi as price tag revealed

Manchester City’s midfield revolution is gathering pace after reports confirmed talks are underway for 18-year-old Moroccan midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, with Lille and the club closing in on a deal worth around £85m. The pursuit follows the club’s decision to sell Rodri to Barcelona, a move that has freed up funds and shifted the Etihad’s transfer strategy into a higher gear. With Enzo Fernández also back on the agenda despite Chelsea’s missed deadline, City’s summer overhaul is taking shape around a clear blueprint: replace Rodri with elite young talent while keeping the squad’s spine intact.

Why Bouaddi now—and what it means for City’s midfield

The departure of Rodri to Barcelona for up to £65m has created the financial space for City to target Bouaddi, who has impressed for Morocco at this summer’s World Cup and agreed personal terms with the club. Lille’s midfield has already signed off on the deal, with City now in advanced talks to finalise the fee. The timing reflects a broader shift in strategy: rather than waiting for a replacement to arrive next year, City are accelerating their timeline by securing a long-term successor now. Bouaddi’s profile—dynamic, technically gifted, and comfortable in a double pivot—aligns with the club’s preferred profile for the role, though his lack of Premier League experience will require careful integration.

City’s interest in Bouaddi also underscores a wider trend in their transfer planning. The club’s willingness to sell Rodri, a player who has been central to their dominance, signals a rare moment of pragmatism in a squad that has often prioritised retention over reinvention. The move to Barcelona, driven by the Spanish champions’ financial muscle and City’s need to refresh their midfield, has opened doors to pursue multiple options simultaneously. As one insider noted, “the Rodri sale wasn’t just about recouping funds—it was about creating the conditions for a generational upgrade.”

Enzo Fernández back in the mix—and Chelsea’s misstep

City’s pursuit of Bouaddi is not their only midfield gamble this summer. Despite missing Chelsea’s Friday deadline to submit a bid for Enzo Fernández, City remain interested in the Argentina international, who has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge for months. The Blues’ failure to meet the initial deadline has left the door ajar, though their financial constraints and Fernández’s reported wage demands can’t be ignored. City’s interest, meanwhile, suggests they are prepared to move quickly if the opportunity arises, even if it means outbidding a rival who has already staked their claim.

This dual-track approach—Bouaddi for the future, Fernández for the present—highlights City’s calculated risk-taking. Bouaddi, at 18, represents a long-term investment, while Fernández, 24, could provide immediate cover in midfield. The club’s willingness to chase both targets reflects their confidence in manager Enzo Maresca’s ability to integrate new signings, even amid the disruption of a squad overhaul. It also underscores the competitive nature of this summer’s market, where clubs are forced to act decisively to secure their preferred targets before rivals can.

The tactical puzzle: how Maresca reshapes City’s midfield

Maresca’s vision for City’s midfield will hinge on how he balances Bouaddi’s development with the need for immediate impact. Bouaddi’s strengths—his ability to progress play, press aggressively, and operate in tight spaces—suggest he could slot into a high-pressing system, but his lack of top-flight experience means he may need time to adapt. Fernández, by contrast, offers a more established profile: a box-to-box midfielder capable of dictating tempo and contributing defensively. The challenge for Maresca will be to blend these profiles without overhauling City’s tactical identity.

One potential solution is a flexible system that allows Bouaddi to grow into a starting role while using Fernández as a rotational option. City’s recent transfer activity, including the reported pursuit of Bouaddi and Fernández, also hints at a broader strategy to future-proof their midfield. With Rodri’s departure creating a void, Maresca will need to ensure that the new arrivals can replicate the Spaniard’s ability to control games. The early signs suggest City are prioritising versatility, with both Bouaddi and Fernández capable of playing in multiple midfield roles.

City’s midfield overhaul is not without risks. Bouaddi’s £85m price tag makes him one of the most expensive teenagers in football history, and his transition to the Premier League will be closely scrutinised. Fernández, meanwhile, could command a fee in excess of £80m, adding further financial pressure. Yet the club’s willingness to take these gambles reflects their confidence in Maresca’s project and their belief that a reshaped midfield can deliver another title challenge. As City push for a fourth consecutive Premier League crown, their transfer strategy is becoming as much about legacy as it is about immediate success.

With talks ongoing for Bouaddi and City still monitoring the Enzo Fernández situation, the next fortnight could define their summer. The Rodri sale has set the wheels in motion, but the true test will be whether Maresca can mould a midfield that can replicate—or even surpass—the dominance of his predecessor. For City, the gamble is worth taking.
