Man Utd have got go ahead from £255million transfer targets for summer moves

Manchester United’s summer transfer business remains a work in progress, with less than a month until Michael Carrick’s first full season in charge. The club has already completed three signings—goalkeeper Karl Darlow, and midfielders Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos—but the squad still needs reinforcement before the Premier League curtain-raiser against Hull City on August 22. United are now positioned as frontrunners for Bologna defender Jhon Lucumi, a 28-year-old World Cup participant whose club is demanding €25million (£21.4m) plus €3million (£2.6m) in add-ons, according to Quotidiano Sportivo. Juventus, Nottingham Forest, and Bournemouth have also entered the race, but Lucumi is said to prefer a move to a “big club,” with Old Trafford currently leading the pursuit.

Midfield jostling exposes internal divides

Carrick’s reshaping of the engine room has stalled after the departures of Casemiro and the long-term absence of Manuel Ugarte. United are now weighing a third midfield addition, with Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha emerging as a target. However, Sky Sports Germany report that Newcastle United are preparing an offer for the 25-year-old, while Dortmund’s €100million (£85.8m) valuation has dampened United’s enthusiasm. The disagreement extends beyond valuation: United’s director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, has pushed for AS Roma’s Manu Kone, while sporting director Jason Wilcox is unconvinced by the France international’s profile, per talkSPORT’s Ben Jacobs. With just two weeks until the season opener, the club’s inability to align on targets risks leaving Carrick short-handed.

United’s pursuit of Nmecha is further complicated by Newcastle’s accelerating interest, which has reportedly intensified after Bruno Guimarães’ impending £75m move to Arsenal. The Magpies are positioning Nmecha as Guimarães’ replacement, while United’s reported interest has waned in the face of Dortmund’s asking price. The window is closing, and Carrick’s midfield trio of Tielemans, Santos, and a third option—if secured—will face an immediate test against a resurgent Hull side.

Arsenal pivot to Esposito as Gunners chase striking depth

Arsenal’s summer plans have shifted after Vinícius Júnior’s contract extension at Real Madrid ended their pursuit. Now, Mikel Arteta’s side are reportedly targeting Inter Milan’s Pio Esposito, a 21-year-old striker who has caught their eye, according to The Sun. United are also monitoring the forward, though they are not rushing to table an offer. Inter have publicly labelled Esposito “untouchable,” but privately placed a £73m price tag in case bids materialise. Sources close to the player suggest he remains committed to Inter yet harbours ambitions of a Premier League switch.

Arsenal’s interest in Esposito follows their reported pursuit of Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa, though Villa are said to be “resigned to losing” the defender, per The Sun. The Gunners’ defensive reshuffle comes amid injuries to William Saliba, Ben White, and Jurrien Timber, underscoring their need for defensive reinforcement. United’s potential involvement in the Esposito race adds another layer to a summer transfer market where both clubs are competing for overlapping targets.

Defensive gaps and deadline pressure

Lucumi’s potential arrival would address United’s defensive fragility, exacerbated last season by injuries to Lisandro Martínez and Matthijs de Ligt. The Colombian’s willingness to join a “big club” and United’s frontrunner status could force the issue before the window’s close. Meanwhile, Carrick may also explore Brighton’s Alex Scott, a 22-year-old midfielder whose ankle ligament injury has lowered his price and made him a more viable option. Scott’s receptiveness to a move to Old Trafford, combined with United’s need for depth in midfield, makes him a pragmatic fallback.

The club’s transfer disagreements—between Vivell and Wilcox, and between valuation and urgency—mirror the broader challenges facing Carrick’s first full campaign. With Arsenal and Newcastle also active, United cannot afford further delays. The next fortnight will determine whether Carrick’s squad is ready for the demands of a congested domestic and European schedule, or if internal misalignment leaves them exposed.

Manchester United’s summer transfer window is entering its decisive phase, with Lucumi, Nmecha, and Scott among the names still in play. The club’s ability to resolve internal disputes and finalise deals will define Carrick’s first season in charge—before the Premier League’s relentless rhythm takes hold.
