Man Utd ‘living in the past’ as transfer failings exposed in damning Liverpool comparison

Manchester United’s summer transfer window has been defined by what they did not achieve, not what they did. As rivals Liverpool and Manchester City strengthened their squads with headline names, the Red Devils were left watching targets slip through their fingers. The result is a damning comparison: United are still trading on past prestige while modern clubs move decisively.

Targets slipping away to rivals

Elliot Anderson’s £116 million move to Manchester City was a direct blow to United’s ambitions. The midfielder, long linked with the Old Trafford club, chose the Etihad over Old Trafford, a decision that underscored United’s inability to close deals at the highest level. Sandro Tonali’s £100 million switch to Tottenham followed a similar pattern, with the Italy international opting for north London over Manchester.

Mateus Fernandes was another name United pursued, only for the midfielder to join Tottenham for £85 million. The club’s failure to secure these players is not just about missed opportunities; it reflects a broader struggle to compete with clubs that have clearer project visions. Ruud Gullit, speaking to NY Sports Day, put it bluntly: “Manchester United sometimes live in the past too much. You have to adapt to modern developments.”

Liverpool’s model exposes United’s flaws

While United hesitated, Liverpool acted. Andoni Iraola’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola highlights the Reds’ proactive approach. Barcola’s omission from PSG’s French Super Cup squad—a match Liverpool won—was a tactical gift, giving the Merseysiders leverage in negotiations. Liverpool’s willingness to play the long game contrasts sharply with United’s reactive stance, as reported by Independent Football.

United’s summer has been defined by midfield additions like Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, but these signings lack the star power of their rivals’ recruits. The Red Devils’ inability to challenge for top-tier talent is now a recurring theme, one that risks turning their squad into a collection of serviceable players rather than title contenders. This pattern was noted by Mirror Football, which highlighted United’s struggles to attract elite players in a competitive market.

The squad’s structural weaknesses

United’s transfer failures come at a critical time. Michael Carrick’s first full season as manager will demand squad depth across four competitions, yet the club’s inability to secure marquee signings leaves them vulnerable. Last season’s third-place finish—achieved with no European football and early exits in domestic cups—was built on grit, not ambition. This year, that approach may not suffice, as BBC Sport has noted in its analysis of United’s squad-building challenges.

The contrast with Liverpool is stark. The Reds’ summer activity has been defined by targeted, high-impact moves, while United’s business has been cautious. The result is a squad that, while improved, still lacks the firepower to challenge for the Premier League title. As London Evening Standard reported, United’s pursuit of a striker remains unresolved, further exposing their transfer hesitancy.

United’s transfer strategy has been exposed as outdated. While rivals like Liverpool and City move with purpose, United’s hesitation has cost them dearly. The club’s inability to secure top-tier talent is not just a summer failure; it’s a symptom of a deeper issue. Without a clear vision and the willingness to back it with bold decisions, United risk falling further behind in the race for silverware.
