Man Utd news: Alejandro Balde decision made and star ‘expects to leave’ in next week

Manchester United face a frantic final stretch in the transfer window as Michael Carrick races to reshape Erik ten Hag’s squad before the September 1 deadline. With just days left to act, the club is simultaneously pursuing reinforcements and preparing for departures—most notably the potential exit of Alejandro Balde, who has reportedly informed Barcelona he intends to stay at Camp Nou.

Balde’s stance complicates United’s left-back hunt

Reports linking United with a move for Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde intensified this week after the Spain international was left out of Los Cules’ opening La Liga win over Elche. The omission fuelled speculation that a bid was imminent, particularly after Balde was overlooked despite competition from Xavi Espart and Joao Cancelo’s return to the club. However, Fabrizio Romano now reports that Balde has told Barcelona he wants to remain at the Camp Nou.

United had preferred a loan deal with an option to buy, but Barça’s insistence on a permanent transfer has complicated negotiations. The situation is further muddied by Espart’s emergence at left-back, who provided an assist in his league debut and earned praise from Hansi Flick. With Balde’s future now reportedly settled at Barcelona, United must pivot quickly—either by accelerating their pursuit of another left-back or accepting that their defensive reinforcements may need to come from elsewhere.

Carrick’s squad overhaul enters its decisive phase

The urgency at Old Trafford stems from a disastrous start to the season, capped by a 2-0 defeat at Hull City that exposed United’s defensive frailties. Carrick, now in his third game as interim manager, faces a critical test against Ipswich on Sunday—a match that could determine whether the club’s transfer strategy pivots toward survival or reinforcement. The club’s transfer activity has been defined by dual-track negotiations: pushing for additions while preparing for exits.

United’s inability to land a left-back has forced Carrick to reassess his options, with the possibility of reshuffling the existing squad taking precedence over new signings. The club’s recent Carabao Cup draw against Brighton adds another layer of complexity, offering a winnable tie but little respite if the first-team squad remains unsettled. Whether through loan moves or internal promotions, the coming days will reveal how far Carrick is willing to go to steady the ship before the Premier League resumes.

Title races and cup draws add to the pressure

While United scramble to address their squad flaws, the broader football landscape offers little respite. Arsenal’s reported £50m agreement for a new signing underscores the Premier League’s relentless pace, while Liverpool’s Carabao Cup draw against Tottenham adds another layer of complexity for the top-four contenders. United, meanwhile, face Brighton in the third round—a tie that could provide a morale boost if handled correctly, or further expose their deficiencies if not.

The EFL Cup draw has handed United a winnable fixture, but the competition’s secondary status means little if the first-team squad remains unsettled. Carrick’s interim tenure will be judged not just on transfer business, but on whether he can extract a positive result from a squad still in flux. With the window closing, every decision—whether a signing, a sale, or a tactical tweak—carries outsized weight.

For United, the next seven days will define more than just their transfer strategy. They are at a crossroads: either Carrick’s interim spell buys enough time to steady the ship, or the club’s summer of discontent spills into another season of underachievement. Balde’s reported decision to stay at Barcelona has removed one variable, but the bigger equation remains unsolved. With Ipswich, Brighton, and the EFL Cup all demanding attention, the clock is ticking—and Carrick’s margin for error is shrinking by the hour.
