Man Utd news: ‘Approach made’ for Lewis Hall alternative as £35m transfer dubbed ‘steal’

Manchester United’s summer rebuild under Michael Carrick is taking an unexpected turn. With Lewis Hall’s move to Old Trafford stalled by Newcastle’s refusal to sell, the club has pivoted to a far cheaper alternative—Club Brugge’s Joaquin Seys—amid a broader push for value in the transfer market. The Mirror reports United have already made contact with Brugge over the 21-year-old left-back, who has emerged as a surprise inclusion in Belgium’s World Cup 2026 squad after their quarter-final exit to eventual winners Spain. The Sun adds that Brugge will demand £30m for Seys, a figure Carrick’s side appear willing to meet.

Why Seys fits Carrick’s blueprint

United’s interest in Seys underscores a clear shift in strategy. After securing Youri Tielemans for £35m—a deal hailed by former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel as a “steal”—Carrick’s recruitment team is prioritising profile over profile. Seys, who has impressed in Belgium’s Pro League and forced his way into Roberto Martinez’s squad, offers a left-footed option to bolster a defence that remains unsettled. Diogo Dalot is United’s only natural left-back currently, with Luke Shaw’s future uncertain as he enters the final year of his contract.

The Sun reports Brugge will demand £30m for Seys, a figure Carrick’s side appear willing to meet. Yet competition is fierce: Arsenal and Aston Villa have also registered interest, with the Gunners’ pursuit of defensive reinforcements adding urgency to United’s pursuit. The race to sign Seys reflects a wider trend this summer, where clubs are targeting young, high-potential players over established names—a gamble Carrick seems prepared to take. Seys’ Champions League experience and Belgian youth-team pedigree further align with Carrick’s preference for players who can develop under his watch.

Hall’s exit clears the path for alternatives

United’s pursuit of Hall, once a frontrunner to replace Shaw, collapsed after Newcastle’s refusal to entertain offers. The 21-year-old’s rejection of a return to Chelsea further complicated matters, leaving Carrick with little choice but to explore other options. Those reports suggesting United were edging closer to winning the Hall race have since been superseded by events, with Seys now the primary target. The club’s pragmatic pivot reflects a broader realignment under Carrick, who has made it clear that value will dictate his recruitment this summer.

Carrick’s midfield overhaul—centred on Tielemans’ arrival—has dominated headlines, but defensive reinforcements remain a priority. Shaw’s contract situation adds another layer of complexity, with United’s failure to tie him down long-term leaving them exposed. Seys, with his Champions League experience and Belgian youth-team pedigree, fits the mould of a player who could develop under Carrick’s watch. The Belgian’s inclusion in Martinez’s World Cup 2026 squad, despite Belgium’s early exit, underscores his standing as a player with international pedigree at just 21.

What comes next in a compressed window

The next 10 days will be decisive. United’s interest in Seys is just one thread in a broader web of defensive targets, with the Independent linking them to Antonee Robinson and Jorge Salinas as fallback options. The club’s willingness to act quickly contrasts with their sluggishness in previous windows, where indecision often cost them dearly. Tielemans’ arrival, however, proves Carrick is prepared to move decisively when the right profile emerges.

Off the pitch, Carrick’s own future remains a secondary storyline. His position appears secure for now, with the club’s transfer activity serving as a barometer of his long-term project. The Seys deal, if completed, would send a signal that Carrick’s United are prioritising smart recruitment over splashy signings. For now, the focus is on Seys. At £30m, he represents a fraction of the fees United have paid for defensive reinforcements in recent years. Whether he can replicate Tielemans’ impact remains to be seen, but Carrick’s willingness to back his judgement—even in the face of competition from Arsenal—suggests United are serious about ending their defensive merry-go-round. The next move belongs to Brugge, but Carrick’s United are no longer waiting for the market to come to them.
