Manchester United v Atletico Madrid LIVE: Michael Carrick’s side continue pre-season campaign

Manchester United’s pre-season campaign reaches its most demanding phase today as Michael Carrick’s side face Atletico Madrid in Stockholm, a fixture designed to test the depth of a squad still settling into its new identity. After a humbling opening defeat to Wrexham, United responded emphatically with a 5-0 thrashing of Rosenborg, but Atletico arrive off the back of a 4-1 LaLiga win over Getafe, with Ademola Lookman netting twice. This is no ordinary friendly; it is the third of five high-profile tests before the Premier League curtain-raiser at Hull City, and the outcome will shape perceptions of a club still searching for rhythm.

Why this match matters now

United’s pre-season has already provided clearer signals than many expected. The 5-0 demolition of Rosenborg showcased the attacking potential of youngsters like Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, while also underlining the gulf between Carrick’s transitional side and lower-league opponents. Atletico, meanwhile, are far closer to their competitive selves, fresh from dismantling Getafe with Lookman’s brace exposing defensive frailties. The contrast in preparation is stark: United are still assembling their puzzle, while Atletico arrive with cohesion forged in pre-season drills.

Carrick’s squad remains unsettled by absences. Benjamin Sesko and Manuel Ugarte are sidelined, but Amad Diallo’s return offers a lift, while new signing Andrey Santos is set to feature again. The absence of key figures like Matthijs de Ligt and Youri Tielemans—who only recently arrived from the World Cup—highlights the logistical challenges of integrating new talent before competitive football resumes. This match will reveal how Carrick’s blend of youth and experience holds up against a European outfit built for intensity.

What comes next for both sides

Victory or a credible draw against Atletico would validate United’s progress, but defeat would raise fresh questions about the squad’s readiness for the Premier League. The next fixtures—against Paris Saint-Germain, Leeds, and AC Milan—will demand even greater cohesion, with Tielemans and first-choice keeper Senne Lammens expected to bolster the lineup in the coming weeks. For Atletico, this is a chance to fine-tune ahead of their own league campaign, with manager Diego Simeone likely to rotate but maintain a high tempo.

Beyond the pitch, the transfer window looms large. While United focus on shoring up their squad, Arsenal’s pursuit of Vinicius Jr and Bruno Guimarães has intensified, with reports suggesting the Gunners are prepared to meet Real Madrid’s valuation if the Brazilian forward’s contract talks stall. United, meanwhile, have been linked with a move for Newcastle’s Ollie Watkins, though any bid would face stiff competition from rivals. The window’s outcome will define Carrick’s first summer in charge, but for now, the priority is proving this pre-season is more than just a series of exhibitions.

Tactical snapshot: Carrick’s evolving shape

United’s predicted lineup—Heaton; Yoro, Maguire, Heaven, Shaw; Mount, Santos; Mbeumo, Lacey, Dorgu; Zirkzee—suggests a 4-2-3-1, with Mount and Santos tasked with linking midfield to attack. The inclusion of 15-year-old JJ Gabriel hints at Carrick’s willingness to blood academy talent, while Zirkzee’s physical presence up front could test Atletico’s defensive structure. Atletico, meanwhile, are likely to deploy a mid-block, with Koke and Hjulmand shielding a back four that includes Marcos Llorente, one of the few World Cup finalists still available. Their reliance on Lookman’s pace and creativity will force United’s full-backs into defensive duties, a scenario that could expose inexperience at the back.

How Carrick adapts to Atletico’s pressing will be the key narrative. If United can transition quickly from defence to attack, they may exploit spaces left by Atletico’s high line. But if the visitors’ mid-block frustrates, Carrick’s side could find themselves chasing shadows—a familiar trap in pre-season, but one that risks undermining confidence ahead of the Premier League.

Tonight’s result will not decide anything definitively, but it will shape the narrative. United must show they can compete against a side built for European football, not just lower-league opponents. For Carrick, it is another step in a summer of rebuilding, where every minute counts.
