Marauding Madjo! How ‘new’ Villa showed their teeth against PSG

Aston Villa may have left Salzburg with a 2-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, but they returned with something far more valuable: two teenagers who announced themselves on the biggest stage. Brian Madjo’s competitive debut ended an eight-month wait after FIFA initially blocked his registration, while George Hemmings’ energy and directness offered a glimpse of Villa’s next wave. Unai Emery’s side did not just show up against the Champions League holders; they pushed them harder than anyone has in recent months, with Madjo’s performance alone forcing Gianluigi Donnarumma into three first-half saves.

Madjo’s debut was worth the eight-month wait

For 212 days, Brian Madjo’s arrival at Villa Park had been stalled by bureaucratic hurdles. A FIFA registration dispute—stemming from his three Luxembourg friendlies before switching to England’s youth teams—kept the 17-year-old on the sidelines until an appeal through the Court of Arbitration for Sport finally cleared him on 5 August 2026, just eight days before the UEFA Super Cup. When he stepped onto the pitch in Salzburg, the teenager did not just make his competitive debut—he made it count.

Madjo’s opening strike, a first-time volley from John McGinn’s whipped cross after holding off PSG’s Willian Pacho, cancelled out Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s early opener. The goal made him the youngest scorer in UEFA Super Cup history at 17 years and 243 days, breaking Patrick Kluivert’s 30-year record set in 1996. More importantly, it underscored why Emery fought so hard to bring him to England. In a first half where he rattled the crossbar with a 25-yard drive and forced Donnarumma into saves from two one-on-one chances, Madjo was the most dangerous attacker on the pitch—creating four clear big chances in the opening 45 minutes, a tally only Karim Benzema had managed against PSG in a Champions League game since 2019.

Villa’s pursuit of Madjo began in January, but the teenager’s physical maturity and composure belied his age. Strong in the air and quick in transition, he moved like a player with far more experience. Emery, who personally pushed for his signing from Metz, has repeatedly praised Madjo’s ability to absorb tactical information—a trait that could see him force his way into England’s senior set-up sooner rather than later. With Harry Kane’s future uncertain beyond Euro 2028, the Three Lions may soon have a new No. 9 to monitor.

Hemmings and Villa’s young core flex their muscle

If Madjo’s performance was the headline, George Hemmings’ display was the supporting act. The 19-year-old winger, making his first appearance for Villa’s senior side, provided energy and directness that unsettled PSG’s defence. His willingness to track back and press Marquinhos for 87 minutes showed the fearlessness Emery demands from his young players, while his dribble past Vitinha in the 62nd minute was one of the few moments of genuine penetration in a cagey second half.

Villa’s willingness to blood teenagers in Salzburg was no accident. With Emiliano Martinez, Ezri Konsa, and Ollie Watkins all rested, Emery turned to his academy products to test themselves against world-class opposition. The gamble paid off in moments, even if Desire Doue’s second-half winner—checked by VAR after initially being ruled out for offside—sealed PSG’s victory. Still, the sight of Madjo and Hemmings competing with the likes of Vitinha and Warren Zaïre-Emery was a reminder that Villa’s project is not just about established stars.

Villa’s recent transfer activity has focused on bringing in young talent, from Madjo to summer signing Johan Manzambi (sidelined through a knee injury picked up at Euro 2024). The club’s approach contrasts with the spending sprees of their rivals, yet their ability to integrate teenagers into high-pressure games suggests Emery is building something sustainable. The question now is whether these performances translate into regular minutes in the Premier League, where Villa will need every weapon available—particularly with Konsa’s future still unsettled.

What comes next for Villa and their new stars

The Super Cup defeat will sting for Villa, but the real victory was the statement made by their youngsters. PSG, who have conceded more big chances in a single half only once since winning their first Champions League in 2021 (that 5-4 wild game against Bayern Munich in April), were rattled by Villa’s intensity. Madjo’s performance alone—four clear chances in the first 45 minutes—was enough to turn heads.

For Madjo, the next step is clear: translate this debut into consistent Premier League minutes. With Ollie Watkins likely to return from World Cup duty and Tammy Abraham on the bench in Salzburg, competition for places is fierce. Yet Emery has shown he is not afraid to reward form, and Madjo’s physical profile and hunger could see him force his way into the squad. Hemmings, meanwhile, may need a loan to gain experience, but his direct style could be crucial if Villa prioritise pace in attack.

The bigger picture, however, is Villa’s long-term project. The club’s transfer strategy, centred on young talent, is paying dividends in terms of squad depth and morale. While Arsenal’s reported interest in Ezri Konsa dominates transfer talk, Villa’s ability to develop their own stars may prove just as valuable. If Madjo and Hemmings can follow in the footsteps of players like Youri Tielemans—who, despite his own transfer saga, remains a key figure at Villa—the club’s future looks bright.

For now, though, the focus is on the present. Villa may have lost in Salzburg, but they left with a clear message: their next generation is ready to bite.
