Maresca in no mood to be ‘friendly’ as Arteta makes bold claim

Enzo Maresca’s first competitive act as Manchester City manager will be anything but cordial. The Community Shield on Sunday is a trophy in its own right for both clubs, and the Italian has made clear his side’s ambition is to “close the gap to Arsenal” after finishing seven points behind the champions last season. Mikel Arteta, whose players have shown “the hunger to win the season’s first trophy,” framed the encounter as a clash between two managers he regards as equals to Pep Guardiola. With silverware on the line, neither side is expected to treat this as a friendly.

New rivalry, old script

The Community Shield has historically been Arsenal’s domain against City, with the Gunners winning all three of their previous meetings. This weekend’s fixture in Cardiff arrives as a statement of intent from Maresca, who arrives at the Etihad with a clear target: reduce the seven-point deficit to Arteta’s side. “For me personally, it’s a trophy,” Maresca said. “When trophies are there in a final you are there to win the game, no friendly game at all.” City’s pre-season has been steady, but the real test begins when the whistle blows. Haaland is expected to feature despite a minor heel issue, while Arsenal open their league campaign against Coventry five days later and City begin two days after that against Bournemouth—both live on Sky Sports.

According to Sky Sports’ predictor, Arsenal are currently installed as title favorites, some four points clear of Manchester City. These odds, while indicative of form and squad strength, are not definitive—merely a snapshot of early-season expectations. The Community Shield, however, offers the first tangible glimpse of whether Maresca’s tactical reset can bridge that gap. His arrival signals a deliberate shift away from Pep Guardiola’s later-season emphasis on positional control toward a more vertical, direct style, a transition already hinted at by the January arrival of Antoine Semenyo. Whether City’s midfield can adapt to this new rhythm will be pivotal in determining how quickly the seven-point deficit can be erased.

Transfer currents swirl around both benches

While Maresca plots his first steps in England, Arsenal are deep in talks over two defensive targets. The club is in discussions with Bayer Leverkusen over Jarell Quansah, though Leverkusen have yet to receive formal contact from Arsenal, according to football.london. Meanwhile, Arsenal continue to pursue Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa as part of Arteta’s push to strengthen before the deadline. The Gunners’ summer has been turbulent, with reported interest in Victor Osimhen from Galatasaray and Nigeria adding another layer to their recruitment noise. Arsenal’s approach remains cautious: “We want to improve the squad and we have detected areas that we can strengthen,” Arteta said, declining further comment.

Over at City, the exit of Tijjani Reijnders underscores the volatility of modern transfers. The Dutch midfielder is set to join Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah only one season into a five-year contract, netting City a reported £55m return on a £45m outlay. Reijnders’ trajectory—from Serie A midfielder of the season at AC Milan to a move that amounts to a step down—highlights the widening gulf between ambition and reality in elite football. City’s recruitment strategy under Maresca appears to be shifting, with links to Enzo Fernández at Chelsea now in focus as the club pursues a more direct, vertical style. The contrast is stark: where Reijnders was a victim of Guardiola’s mid-season tactical pivot, Fernández’s profile—ball-carrying, progressive passing, and high pressing—aligns more closely with Maresca’s preferred system.

Tactical reset under Maresca

Maresca’s arrival signals a subtle but deliberate tactical pivot. City’s mid-season shift under Guardiola toward a more direct approach—accelerated by the January arrival of Antoine Semenyo—has left gaps that Reijnders struggled to fill. The new manager’s preference for a more vertical system may explain the club’s pursuit of Fernández, whose ball-carrying and progressive passing align with that philosophy. Whether this evolution can bridge the seven-point gap to Arsenal remains the central question. Arteta’s side, meanwhile, enters the season as title favorites according to Sky Sports’ predictor, four points clear of City. The Community Shield is more than a curtain-raiser; it is the first tangible measure of Maresca’s readiness to challenge for the Premier League.

For Arsenal, the fixture is a chance to assert their dominance in this new rivalry. For City, it is a statement that the transition from Guardiola to Maresca will not mean a retreat from the title race. Both managers have framed this as a competitive necessity, not a friendly. When the players step onto the pitch, the stakes will be clear: only one side can leave Cardiff with the first silverware of the season. The Community Shield is no longer a ceremonial curtain-raiser—it is the opening salvo in what promises to be a fiercely contested campaign.
