Man City captaincy: Why Maresca picked Silva over Haaland

Enzo Maresca’s first major call as Manchester City manager was to name Bernardo Silva as club captain “for now,” passing over Erling Haaland in the process. The decision frames a clear philosophy: positional leadership matters more than star power. Haaland’s role as City’s primary goalscorer—he netted 38 times last season—counts against him in Maresca’s eyes, not because of character, but because the manager needs his captain on the touchline to relay tactical adjustments immediately after goals are scored.

Why Maresca chose positional clarity over star power

Maresca’s reasoning is practical. He wants his captain available to discuss changes right after City score, which rules out Haaland given his record-breaking output. “Because if he scores he can’t celebrate, yes,” Maresca said, highlighting the conflict between Haaland’s goalscoring duties and captaincy responsibilities. The manager instead pointed to Ruben Dias as the leading candidate, citing the defender’s long-standing leadership within the squad. “Ruben has shown during his time at this club how he is as a player, in terms of leadership,” Maresca added. “It’s important for the captain and the leader to know that the reason they are captain is because I expect more from them.”

Silva’s departure to Real Madrid created the vacancy, and Maresca has not yet finalized a permanent successor. For now, the leadership group consists of Dias and Haaland, with two more spots to be filled after the transfer window. Spain’s Rodri, a World Cup-winning midfielder, remains at City but is heavily linked with Barcelona, which complicates his long-term role in the group. Maresca’s approach suggests he values consistency and positional awareness over headline-grabbing names.

Transfer window adds context to City’s evolving hierarchy

The captaincy decision arrives as City pursue midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille, a move confirmed by Davide Ancelotti, Lille’s head coach. Ancelotti even hoped the deal would fall through, but the talks underscore City’s ongoing squad overhaul under Maresca. Meanwhile, the manager’s first competitive test comes Sunday in the Community Shield against Arsenal, where he will also debut Elliot Anderson following his £116m move from Nottingham Forest. Maresca described Anderson as a “holding midfielder,” hinting at a potential positional shift if Rodri departs, further reshaping City’s midfield dynamics.

City’s transfer activity reflects Maresca’s broader vision. The pursuit of Bouaddi, a player not yet established in England, contrasts with the club’s previous high-profile signings. This suggests a preference for technical midfielders who can integrate into a structured system, aligning with Maresca’s captaincy criteria: leadership must serve the collective, not the individual.

Leadership in transition: who fits Maresca’s blueprint?

Beyond Dias and Haaland, Maresca has outlined a broader leadership group that could include Phil Foden, now City’s longest-serving first-team player, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Italy’s national captain, Marc Guéhi, FA Cup-winning skipper at Crystal Palace, and veteran Mateo Kovačić. The inclusion of Foden—City’s most tenured player—signals Maresca’s intent to blend experience with emerging talent. However, the manager’s emphasis on “giving more” from his captains implies a demanding standard, one that prioritizes tactical discipline over charisma.

This approach mirrors Maresca’s own managerial style, shaped by his time under Pep Guardiola. Like his predecessor, Maresca appears to favor leaders who operate within a system rather than those who rely on individual influence. Haaland’s goalscoring prowess, while invaluable, does not align with this framework, whereas Dias’s defensive organization and vocal presence do. The captaincy, in Maresca’s view, is a role that demands availability and tactical acumen—not just influence.

City’s Community Shield clash with Arsenal will offer an early glimpse into Maresca’s leadership in action. If Dias assumes the armband, his presence will reinforce the message: captaincy is a function, not a reward. Haaland, meanwhile, will continue to lead by example—just not from the front.
