Micah Richards has told Sky Sports and BBC of retirement plan with Roy Keane set to quit first

Micah Richards and Roy Keane are preparing to step away from the studio, marking the end of an era for football punditry. The two Sky Sports stalwarts have set clear retirement timelines, with Keane exiting before Richards as both prepare to leave the microphone behind. Their departures will reshape the landscape of football broadcasting, where their personalities have become synonymous with sharp analysis and unfiltered opinions. Richards, a former England international and Manchester City right-back, has built a reputation as one of the most recognisable voices in football media since retiring as a player in 2019, appearing regularly on Sky Sports, BBC’s Match of the Day, and CBS Sports.

Retirement timelines set in stone

Richards, 38, has committed to leaving punditry by 2034, eight years from now, to focus on community initiatives in his hometown of Chapeltown, Leeds. His decision follows a July 2024 announcement where he outlined his plans to step away from punditry within the next eight years, prioritising local impact over continued screen time. The former defender’s commitment to Chapeltown reflects his long-standing ties to the area, where he has been involved in grassroots football development.

Keane, 55, will step away sooner. The Manchester United legend, known for his no-nonsense approach, has already signalled his intention to quit before Richards. During a conversation on the Stick to Football podcast in August 2024, he told Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher that he would leave the “rat race” within 12 months, describing his future plans as “a nice house somewhere, a bit of land, a few animals.” His remarks came just weeks after he revealed his broader ambition to relocate overseas. In an appearance on The Overlap On Tour in Turin, he disclosed plans to move abroad within the next few years, naming Switzerland as a potential destination. “In the next couple of years, I reckon I will be moving abroad,” he said. “Switzerland, maybe? Switzerland is beautiful.”

Legacy built on authenticity

Both pundits have carved out distinct identities in football broadcasting. Richards, with his relentless work ethic and engaging presence, has become a fixture across multiple platforms. His decision to quit within eight years reflects a deliberate shift toward life beyond the studio, prioritising local impact over screen time. The former defender’s on-air persona—characterised by his technical insights and upbeat delivery—has made him a fan favourite, particularly among younger viewers who have grown up with his commentary.

Keane’s influence, meanwhile, stems from his uncompromising style. His blunt assessments and dry humour have endeared him to audiences, even as he has maintained a gruff exterior. His comments about quitting punditry in ten years—flatly rejecting the idea—underscore his commitment to the craft, even as he prepares to walk away. The Irishman’s planned relocation to Switzerland signals a broader desire to disengage from the relentless cycle of football media, a move that aligns with his long-standing preference for privacy outside the spotlight.

For Sky Sports, their exits will leave a void. Keane’s presence on Super Sunday and Richards’ contributions to analysis shows have defined coverage for years. Their departures come at a time when the network is already navigating shifts in broadcasting, with younger voices emerging in the punditry space. The loss of two such high-profile personalities will force Sky to recalibrate its approach, particularly in live match analysis where their voices have become synonymous with the Premier League’s narrative.

What comes next?

The question now is how Sky Sports will adapt. Neither pundit has confirmed immediate plans beyond their retirement dates, but their influence will linger. Richards’ focus on community work in Leeds suggests a return to grassroots engagement, while Keane’s move abroad hints at a quieter life away from the spotlight. For now, both remain active. Keane is still contributing to Sky Sports’ Premier League coverage, and Richards continues his regular appearances on Match of the Day and CBS. Their final years in broadcasting will be closely watched, not just for their insights, but for the mark they leave on a generation of fans who have grown accustomed to their voices.

As football media evolves, the exits of Richards and Keane will be felt. Their retirements are not just personal milestones; they signal a changing of the guard in a profession where personality and authenticity have long been prized. The next chapter for Sky Sports—and for football punditry—will have to be written without two of its most distinctive figures. For a network that has thrived on their contributions, the challenge will be to find successors who can match their depth of experience and the unique chemistry they brought to the studio.
