Mo Salah endures nightmare as Liverpool icon’s manager QUITS after Europa League failure

Mohamed Salah’s brief, ill-fated stint at Trabzonspor reached its nadir on Monday night after the club’s Europa League hopes were extinguished by a 5-0 on aggregate defeat to Ferencváros. The collapse cost manager Fatih Tekke his job, delivered a bruising reality check to Salah’s ambitions in Turkey, and left Liverpool’s former talisman facing an uncertain future just weeks after his free transfer from Anfield.

How a European dream unravelled in 90 minutes

Trabzonspor’s play-off tie against Ferencváros began with a 1-0 home defeat in the first leg, leaving the Turkish side needing a three-goal turnaround. Salah, who had made only his third start since arriving on a free transfer, started on the bench before being introduced in the 64th minute as the tie slipped further out of reach. Within five minutes of his introduction, Trabzonspor were reduced to ten men and 0-3 down on the night after goals from Callum O’Dowda, Ryan Mmaee, and a red card for Stefan Šaravanja. Tekke, visibly shaken, took the drastic step of resigning live on air after the final whistle, declaring the defeat “unacceptable” and admitting he could not “sleep with this feeling.” His departure underscores the fragility of a project that once promised Salah a platform to rediscover his European form.

Liverpool’s winger hunt enters the Barcola era

As Salah’s European campaign crumbled, Liverpool’s own search for a direct replacement gathered pace. The Reds have agreed a £100 million deal, with £20 million in add-ons, for Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola, a move that finally gives Andoni Iraola the high-profile winger his system demands. The Frenchman, predominantly a left-sided attacker, will cost more than double what Liverpool paid for Salah in 2017, reflecting the inflation that has reshaped the transfer market.

Iraola, who has spent weeks negotiating with agents and rivals, admitted the club’s late arrival in the market complicated matters. “I definitely would have preferred to have the wingers ready on the first day,” he said. “The same for every position. But I understand that it’s not easy in the market and the wingers that we are trying to sign, they are of a high level.” Liverpool’s pursuit of Ismaila Sarr from Crystal Palace remains active, while Cody Gakpo’s future is openly discussed amid interest from Tottenham and Manchester City. Liverpool continue to chase Sarr as they aim to add a third attacking option before the deadline.

The Salah paradox: departure, replacement, and the weight of history

Salah’s exit from Liverpool was acrimonious in December, when he accused the club of breaking promises and claimed he had been “thrown under the bus.” A short-lived rapprochement followed, but the search for his successor began in earnest. Barcola’s arrival, though delayed, offers a technical profile Iraola covets—pace, creativity, and a direct style suited to Liverpool’s wing-play. Yet the price tag, now approaching £120 million with add-ons, raises questions about whether the club has overcorrected in a single transfer window.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s pursuit of Julián Álvarez has added another layer of complexity. Atletico Madrid’s refusal to sell to Barcelona has kept the Argentina forward’s future fluid, with a Friday deadline looming. The Gunners’ involvement complicates Liverpool’s efforts to finalise Barcola’s medical and complete the paperwork before the window slams shut.

What comes next for Salah, Tekke, and Liverpool’s transfer chessboard

For Tekke, the resignation marks the end of a short but turbulent chapter at Trabzonspor. His replacement will inherit a squad that has already lost its European ambitions and must now regroup for the Turkish Super Lig. Salah, meanwhile, faces a stark choice: remain in Turkey and attempt to rebuild his reputation, or seek another move before the European transfer window closes.

At Liverpool, the focus shifts to Barcola’s integration and the club’s ability to add further attacking depth. The Reds’ pursuit of Sarr continues, while Gakpo’s future hangs in the balance. With the Champions League draw now impacted by UEFA’s new rules, Liverpool’s European path has been reshaped before the season resumes. The next 48 hours will determine whether Iraola’s project takes flight or stalls under the weight of unfinished business.

One thing is certain: Salah’s European nightmare in Trabzon has delivered a sobering lesson in the volatility of football’s transfer market—and Liverpool’s transfer team will be watching closely.
