Mourinho admits he signed Man Utd deal then ripped it up

José Mourinho has lifted the lid on one of football’s most intriguing near-misses, revealing he signed a contract to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in 2013—only to tear it up hours later and return to Chelsea instead. The bombshell admission, aired in a new Netflix documentary titled Mourinho, exposes the fragility of managerial succession plans at Old Trafford and underscores the personal loyalties that shaped Ferguson’s final chapter at the club.

Ferguson’s succession plan unravels in real time

Ferguson confirmed the sequence of events in the same documentary, describing a call from Mourinho in which the Portuguese broke down in tears. “Early evening he phoned me and he was crying,” Ferguson recalled. “And he says: ‘Alex, I can’t take it – I’ve given my word to Chelsea, and I’m not going to break my word.’” The Scot admitted he had been under the impression Mourinho was accepting the United offer, only for the situation to reverse within hours. Mourinho, who had just left Real Madrid, framed the decision as a clash between professional obligation and personal attachment. “For me to lose the chance to be the coach to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson was dramatic,” he said, “but I don’t regret because it was a decision that I made with my heart.”

The episode casts fresh light on United’s post-Ferguson turmoil. David Moyes, Ferguson’s handpicked successor, lasted just 10 months before being sacked in April 2014, a tenure that marked the beginning of a prolonged decline at Old Trafford. Mourinho would eventually arrive in 2016, winning the League Cup and Europa League but never recapturing the dominance Ferguson had instilled. Ferguson’s own tribute to rival Kevin Keegan, in which he praised Newcastle’s “best ever team” under Keegan, serves as a reminder of the contrasting managerial philosophies that defined an era Sir Alex Ferguson says Kevin Keegan built Newcastle’s ‘best ever team’ as he pays tribute to great rival.

Chelsea’s pull proves stronger than Old Trafford’s lure

Mourinho’s decision hinged on his deep bond with Chelsea, where he had already delivered two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and two League Cups during his first spell from 2004 to 2007. “One thing is love for football, and another thing is love for a certain club,” he said in the documentary. “I think this is more powerful than love for football.” The documentary reveals the depth of his connection to Stamford Bridge, where he returned in June 2013—just weeks after Ferguson’s retirement—and promptly secured another league crown and League Cup before his December 2015 dismissal. The Netflix film also touches on his fraught relationship with owner Roman Abramovich, who hired and fired him twice, underscoring the precarious nature of managerial tenures in modern football.

The twist in the tale is that Mourinho’s second United stint, from May 2016 to December 2018, yielded a League Cup and Europa League, yet never translated into sustained success. His combative style and dressing-room tensions—famously including a falling-out with Iker Casillas—highlighted the cultural shift at Old Trafford since Ferguson’s departure. Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid this year, 13 years after his acrimonious exit, completes a circular narrative that began with Ferguson’s retirement and the missed opportunity at United.

Legacy and lessons from a pivotal week in 2013

The revelations arrive at a time when United’s transfer strategy under Erik ten Hag is under intense scrutiny. Mourinho’s confession strips away the myth of seamless succession at United. Ferguson’s retirement triggered a chain reaction that reshaped the Premier League’s hierarchy, with Chelsea and Manchester City emerging as the new powerhouses. The documentary’s timing—amid United’s struggles to regain their former status—makes it more than a historical footnote. It’s a reminder that even the most meticulous plans can hinge on a single, human decision.

As Ferguson put it: “I was disappointed.” The rest of football has spent a decade wondering what might have been.
