Naderi keeps Rangers’ Conference League hopes alive as Devlin sent off

Rangers edged closer to securing a place in the Europa Conference League group stage after Ryan Naderi’s 28th-minute strike gave them a slender lead over Jablonec in the play-off second leg at Ibrox. The Scottish champions, already 1-0 up from the first leg, survived a late scare as Callum Devlin was sent off for a second booking in the 85th minute, but held on to claim a 2-1 aggregate victory. With the tie finely balanced, Naderi’s goal proved decisive in a contest that swung between caution and intensity, while Devlin’s dismissal added a final twist that could shape Rangers’ preparations for the next round.

Naderi’s goal shifts the balance

Naderi’s strike, which came in the 28th minute, gave Rangers the lead they needed to progress. The winger capitalised on a defensive lapse to slot home, extending their aggregate advantage and putting Jablonec under immediate pressure. The visitors, who had started brightly with a direct approach that tested Rangers’ defensive discipline, struggled to recover from the setback and were left chasing the game. Rangers, meanwhile, relied on their experience to see out the contest, knowing a clean sheet would secure their passage.

The goal was a timely reminder of Rangers’ attacking threat, even if their performance lacked the fluidity expected of a side chasing European football. Jablonec’s resilience was tested repeatedly, but Rangers’ organisation in midfield and sharpness in front of goal proved the difference. Naderi’s contribution was pivotal, and his composure under pressure will be crucial as the club eyes further progress in the competition. The winger’s movement off the ball and his ability to exploit the space behind Jablonec’s high line were key factors in unlocking a stubborn defence.

Devlin’s dismissal leaves Rangers shorthanded

The drama was not confined to the scoring. Callum Devlin’s red card for a second booking in the 85th minute added a layer of unpredictability to the closing stages. The midfielder, already cautioned earlier in the half for a tactical foul, compounded his error with a reckless challenge on a counter-attack, leaving Rangers with ten men for the final minutes. The decision was a harsh one, but it forced Rangers to dig deep in defence as Jablonec piled on the pressure, with their best chance falling to a header from the substitute striker that rattled the crossbar in stoppage time.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Rangers’ defensive structure held firm. Their backline, marshalled by experienced hands like James Tavernier and Connor Goldson, repelled several late attempts, ensuring the tie’s outcome remained unchanged. The sending-off will now cast a shadow over their preparations for the next round, with Devlin’s suspension likely to impact their tactical approach, particularly in midfield where his energy and aggression had been a key asset.

Tactical resilience secures Rangers’ progress

Rangers’ victory was built on pragmatism rather than flair. They absorbed pressure early, absorbing Jablonec’s best efforts, and relied on Naderi’s clinical finish to tilt the tie in their favour. The visitors’ direct approach tested Rangers’ defensive discipline, but the hosts remained compact, limiting space between the lines. Their midfield, led by a seasoned presence in John Lundstram, shielded the back four and allowed Rangers to counter when opportunities arose, with Naderi and Fashion Sakala providing the width and creativity.

The sending-off forced a shift in shape, with Rangers retreating deeper and prioritising caution over ambition. Their ability to weather the storm in the final minutes highlighted their mental resilience, a trait that will serve them well in the group stage if they progress. Jablonec’s late surge, though late and ultimately fruitless, exposed minor vulnerabilities that Rangers will need to address before their next challenge, particularly in transition where they were caught out on occasion.

With the play-off hurdle cleared, Rangers now turn their attention to the group stage, where they will face sterner tests. Their performance against Jablonec, though not flawless, demonstrated the qualities needed to compete at this level. Naderi’s goal and Devlin’s dismissal were the defining moments of a tightly contested tie, and they will shape the club’s approach in the weeks ahead, both in terms of squad selection and tactical planning.
