Nev on title race: Liverpool, Man City nowhere near levels required

Gary Neville has delivered a stark assessment of the Premier League title race, arguing that Manchester City and Liverpool are already well below the standard required to challenge Arsenal this season. Speaking on his podcast ahead of his Monday Night Football debut, the Sky Sports pundit suggested the Gunners’ opening-day dominance over Coventry—where they won 3-0 with minimal resistance—has set a new benchmark that the traditional powerhouses are struggling to meet.

Arsenal’s early lead exposes the chasm at the top

Neville’s comments follow a weekend of results that underlined Arsenal’s rapid ascent into a different league. While Liverpool required a 90th-minute penalty from Dominik Szoboszlai to salvage a 2-2 draw with Newcastle, and City needed a stoppage-time Josko Gvardiol header to edge past Bournemouth, Mikel Arteta’s side moved with far greater authority. The Gunners’ performance was so composed that it prompted Neville to declare they “should win this league by a street,” a verdict that now carries weight just seven days into the campaign. The contrast in momentum is striking: Arsenal’s opening win was straightforward, Tottenham and Manchester United were beaten, and the two clubs traditionally expected to set the pace are already scrambling for scraps.

This isn’t merely about results; it’s about the quality of those results. Neville’s point is that the unpredictability of the season’s early fixtures has revealed a hierarchy that no longer favours the usual suspects. Brentford and Hull—teams once routinely brushed aside by City and Liverpool when they were collecting near-100-point seasons—are now capable of testing them. The message is clear: the Premier League’s top tier is no longer a closed shop for the established elite.

Transfer chaos adds to the uncertainty

The upheaval extends beyond the pitch. Liverpool’s pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola has become a saga of valuation and will-they-won’t-they, with PSG’s £140million asking price repeatedly cited as the sticking point. The Frenchman was omitted from PSG’s squad for two recent games, a sign that his future remains unresolved. Meanwhile, Arsenal are closing in on Julian Álvarez, whose own move to Barcelona collapsed this summer. The Argentine’s return to Atlético Madrid on Sunday was met with jeers from the home crowd, a reminder that his transfer is far from straightforward despite his apparent willingness to join the Gunners.

City, too, are navigating choppy waters. Their agreed €100million deal for Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi—reportedly worth €95million upfront with add-ons—highlights their ongoing rebuild after Pep Guardiola’s departure. The club’s summer activity, including the pursuit of Palmeiras winger Allan, underscores a clear intent to refresh the squad, but the early evidence suggests they are still finding their feet under Enzo Maresca. Liverpool, meanwhile, remain in the hunt for a winger, with Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh close to joining after personal terms were agreed, though their previous bids were rejected.

Liverpool’s new-look attack already under scrutiny

Neville’s assessment of Liverpool’s title credentials is tied to their personnel. Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, two of the club’s marquee summer signings, were singled out for criticism after their underwhelming display in the 2-2 draw at Newcastle. The pundit’s demand for improvement from the duo reflects a broader concern: Liverpool’s attacking options are still a work in progress. Their late equaliser, converted by Szoboszlai, masked deeper issues—namely, a lack of cutting edge in open play. The late penalty spared blushes, but it was a reminder that Iraola’s side are still finding their rhythm.

This is the crux of Neville’s argument. The Premier League’s traditional heavyweights are no longer operating at the level that once allowed them to dominate. Arsenal, meanwhile, are sprinting ahead with a blend of tactical clarity and squad depth. The window for City and Liverpool to close the gap is narrowing, and the evidence from the first week suggests they may already be too far behind.

For Liverpool and City, the path forward is fraught with challenge. The former must navigate a transfer market that has repeatedly frustrated their ambitions, while the latter must bed in a new manager and a raft of unfamiliar faces. Arsenal, by contrast, have set a standard that looks increasingly unassailable. The title race, if it even is one, may already be over before the first international break.
