Nottingham Forest v Leeds, Everton v Crystal Palace, EFL and more: football clockwatch – live

Saturday’s Premier League curtain-raiser delivered drama before the first weekend had even finished, while the Championship threw up late twists and a costly red card. Everton began their campaign with a clean sheet and two goals, Crystal Palace ended it with a stretcher and a defeat, and Leeds salvaged a point at the City Ground with a 30th-minute free-kick. Across the leagues, Burton’s upset in League One and Wolves’ late rout at Deepdale underlined how quickly fortunes can shift.

Everton’s defensive resolve and Palace’s cruel setback

Everton’s 2-0 win at Goodison Park was built on composure and concentration, qualities that will be tested far more as the season unfolds. The hosts absorbed early pressure, then broke with purpose; their second goal arrived in the 67th minute when a swift counter pinned Palace back and set up the finish. The visitors’ afternoon darkened when Chadi Riad was carried off on a stretcher with what appeared to be a serious knee injury, leaving Palace with ten men for long spells and a mountain to climb. The loss leaves Crystal Palace without a point from their first match and raises immediate questions about their defensive structure and squad depth.

Leeds steal a point from Forest with a set-piece strike

Nottingham Forest’s Premier League bow under Oliver Glasner lasted 84 minutes before Leeds United equalised through Anton Stach’s free-kick, a moment that exposed Forest’s vulnerability from dead-ball situations. The visitors had struggled to fashion clear chances until the interval, yet the set-piece exposed a defensive block that looked disjointed under pressure. Forest’s late collapse follows a Carabao Cup draw against the same opponents in pre-season, a tie that now feels like a portent rather than a footnote. With Glasner’s side still searching for their first top-flight win of the campaign, the manner of the concession will linger longer than the final score.

League One shocks and Championship late drama

Leicester City’s first home league defeat in the third tier since the late 1950s—2-1 to Burton Albion—set the tone for an unpredictable afternoon in League One. Oliver Skipp’s red card compounded the Foxes’ misery, while Wolves’ 3-0 win at Preston, sealed by Fer Lopez’s second, showed Championship sides can still punish defensive lapses late on. West Ham’s Championship opener ended in frustration after Joel Piroe’s late goal was ruled out for an infringement, leaving Charlton clinging on to a 2-1 lead. At St Mary’s, Southampton’s Ryan Manning converted a stoppage-time penalty to make it 3-1 against Stoke, a result that hands the south coast side a morale-boosting start.

Nottingham Forest now go 11 league games without a win at the City Ground since Oliver Glasner’s appointment, while Leeds can reflect that a single set-piece decided their fate. Palace’s medical team will now assess Riad’s injury, a setback that could force Roy Hodgson to reshuffle before the international break. Everton, meanwhile, will hope their defensive discipline is a sign of things to come rather than a one-off.

As the Premier League prepares for Sunday’s blockbuster between Manchester City and Brighton, Saturday’s outcomes already feel like a microcosm of the season ahead: tight margins, costly errors, and the ever-present threat of late drama. The Carabao Cup second-round draw has already paired Chelsea with Luton and Forest with Leeds, a reminder that cup football can bring fresh twists even when league form stalls. The second-round draw offers a chance for resurgent sides to stake a claim beyond the league grind.

For Palace, the priority is clarity on Riad’s status and a swift reset. For Forest, the focus must shift to shoring up set-pieces and regaining momentum. And for Leeds, a single free-kick has given them breathing space—one they will need if their start to life under Daniel Farke is to match the ambition of their summer recruitment.
