Palace latest: Disasi joins on loan from Chelsea

Axel Disasi has joined Crystal Palace on a season-long loan from Chelsea, adding defensive depth to Patrick Vieira’s squad as the Eagles navigate a congested Premier League schedule. The deal, confirmed by both clubs, marks the latest in Palace’s summer recruitment drive under Vieira, who has reshaped his backline with the additions of US prospect Gozo for £11m and a reported pursuit of Khalaili. Disasi’s arrival provides immediate cover for injuries and suspensions, a recurring issue for Palace last term, where they conceded 60 goals—the second-worst defensive record in the division.

Why this move matters now

Disasi’s loan comes at a critical juncture for both clubs. For Chelsea, it clears a path for further departures in defence while easing wage costs, with the Blues under pressure to balance their books after a turbulent transfer window. The French defender, who joined Chelsea from Monaco for £38.5m in 2023, has struggled to nail down a starting spot under Xabi Alonso, making a temporary exit a pragmatic solution. His limited minutes last season—just 1,245 across all competitions—underscore the need for a fresh start elsewhere.

For Palace, the timing aligns with a fixture list that demands defensive resilience. Vieira’s side face Nottingham Forest and Leeds in the league within the first fortnight of September, bookended by an EFL Cup tie against Charlton Athletic. With injuries to key defenders Joel Ward and Tyrick Mitchell lingering, Disasi offers a ready-made replacement capable of playing across a back three or as a traditional centre-back. His loan deal includes a clause for a permanent move, though Palace will likely assess his impact in high-pressure games before committing long-term.

What comes next for Chelsea and City

While Disasi heads to Selhurst Park, Chelsea’s transfer saga with Manchester City over Enzo Fernández continues to simmer. City are weighing up a bid for the Argentine midfielder, who arrived from Benfica for £107m in 2023, despite Chelsea setting a deadline of £120m earlier this month. Alonso has downplayed the urgency, insisting Fernández is focused ahead of Monday’s Premier League opener against Fulham, where the midfielder’s mixed reception—cheers upon his introduction but jeers from Fulham’s supporters—highlighted his polarising status at Stamford Bridge.

City’s interest underscores their determination to replace Rodri, with Pep Guardiola’s side also tracking Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Roma’s Manu Kone. The Blues, meanwhile, face a delicate balancing act: offloading high-earners like Fernández while retaining squad harmony. Alonso’s public stance suggests Fernández remains part of his plans, but the looming deadline and City’s pursuit could force Chelsea’s hand. The Blues’ need to generate transfer revenue—amid reported interest from Saudi clubs—adds further pressure to resolve the situation.

Palace’s defensive overhaul

Disasi’s arrival fits Vieira’s broader strategy to fortify Palace’s defence, a unit that haemorrhaged goals last season. The club’s recruitment has prioritised versatility and physicality, with Gozo’s £11m signing from the US adding another dimension to their defensive options. The reported pursuit of Khalaili—reportedly of Brentford—further signals Vieira’s intent to build a more resilient backline, though the identity of his first-choice centre-backs remains unsettled. Disasi’s ability to play in a back three—a system Palace have used intermittently—could prove decisive in tight contests, particularly against possession-heavy opponents.

For Disasi, the loan represents a chance to rediscover form after a frustrating spell at Chelsea. His physical profile—standing at 6’3” and boasting a 78% aerial duel success rate in Ligue 1—aligns with Palace’s need for a dominant presence in defensive transitions. With fixtures against Forest, Leeds, and Charlton in quick succession, Vieira will need Disasi to hit the ground running if Palace are to avoid another defensive collapse. The loan also provides Disasi with a platform to showcase his Premier League credentials ahead of a potential permanent move.

As the transfer window tightens, Chelsea’s defensive reshuffle and City’s midfield pursuit will dominate headlines, but Disasi’s move to Palace is the most tangible shift so far. For the Eagles, it’s a calculated gamble on a player with top-flight experience and tactical flexibility; for Chelsea, it’s a necessary step in a summer of upheaval. Whether it pays off remains to be seen—but in a league where defensive frailties are punished ruthlessly, Disasi’s arrival is a pragmatic response to pressing needs on both sides.
