Papers: Arsenal hold further talks over Villa’s Konsa

Arsenal’s defensive reshuffle has taken another turn, with the club holding fresh talks over Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa just as the Gunners’ summer spending spree faces fresh scrutiny. The Daily Mail reports further negotiations over the England defender, whose £50m valuation remains a sticking point despite Arsenal’s persistent interest. Villa, meanwhile, have found an unexpected source of optimism in 17-year-old Brian Madjo, whose competitive debut ended an eight-month wait in emphatic fashion.

Arsenal’s Konsa pursuit stalls on valuation

Arsenal have reopened discussions over Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa, according to the Daily Mail, but remain at odds with Villa’s £50m asking price for the England international. The Gunners’ interest has been well-documented, with reports suggesting they view Konsa as a long-term solution at centre-back. Yet Villa’s stance has not softened, leaving Arsenal to weigh alternatives as the window tightens.

Mikel Arteta has conceded Arsenal’s transfer activity is not yet finished, telling Sky Sports: “There is more that we want to do because every time we have an opportunity to improve the squad and bring more quality and depth to the squad, we need to do that.” The admission follows the £75m capture of Bruno Guimarães, but Arteta’s comments underscore Arsenal’s ongoing search for marquee signings. Their pursuit of Julian Álvarez and Bradley Barcola has yet to yield results, with Arteta noting the scarcity of available players capable of “taking them to the next level.”

Villa, meanwhile, have been linked with a rival bid from Newcastle United for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, per the Daily Mail. The Magpies’ interest complicates Arsenal’s path to Konsa, while Villa’s own defensive concerns—exposed in their Super Cup defeat—may only strengthen their resolve to retain the defender. Konsa’s versatility in a back three could make him a key figure for both clubs in the coming seasons.

Madjo’s debut silences doubts in Vienna

Aston Villa’s 2-1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup was overshadowed by the debut of 17-year-old striker Brian Madjo, who scored within minutes of his first competitive appearance. The teenager, who joined Villa from Metz in January, had been barred from playing by FIFA until a successful appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in early August. His inclusion in the squad for Salzburg marked the culmination of an eight-month wait, during which Villa fought to register the England Under-17 international.

Madjo’s goal—a first-half volley from John McGinn’s cross—cancelled out Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s opener for PSG, though Desire Doué’s second-half winner sealed the result. Still, the teenager’s physical presence and composure under pressure drew praise, with Match of the Day’s Nedum Onuoha and Stephen Warnock labelling his performance “hugely impressive.” His strike came after he had already forced a save from Gianluigi Donnarumma, hinting at a bright future despite Villa’s defeat. The teenager’s ability to hold up play and link with midfield underlined his potential as a future Premier League striker.

The result also highlighted Villa’s attacking limitations, with Ollie Watkins rested and Tammy Abraham unused. Emery’s decision to blood Madjo underscores Villa’s need for depth up front, particularly as they navigate a congested early-season schedule. For Madjo, the goal is just the first step in what could be a long-term battle to secure minutes in a competitive Premier League side. His performance suggests Villa may have found a rare gem in a transfer market often dominated by established names.

Arteta’s window tightens as rivals circle

Arsenal’s transfer business has been defined by near-misses, from Vinícius Júnior’s contract extension at Real Madrid to Morgan Rogers’ move to Chelsea. Arteta’s frustration is palpable, yet the club’s wage structure and squad balance may limit their options. “We are actively trying to do so,” Arteta said of their transfer plans. “The thing in the market is that it doesn’t just depend on you.”

Villa, too, have faced their own transfer sagas, with reports suggesting they missed out on Youri Tielemans to Manchester United after the Belgian midfielder cited the Red Devils’ project as a key factor in his decision. The quote, reported by The Athletic, underscores Villa’s struggle to compete with Europe’s elite for top targets. Their Super Cup outing, though disappointing, may force a rethink in recruitment strategy as they balance ambition with financial prudence.

As the window enters its final stretch, Arsenal’s focus remains on Konsa, while Villa must decide whether to cash in on a defender they can ill afford to lose. Madjo’s debut offers a glimmer of hope, but for both clubs, the next 48 hours could redefine their seasons. The Konsa saga, in particular, encapsulates the broader challenges facing Premier League clubs in an era of inflated valuations and heightened competition for elite talent.

For Arsenal, the Konsa deal remains a litmus test of their ambition. For Villa, Madjo’s breakthrough is a reminder that youth can emerge when least expected. Neither club can afford to stand still, but the coming days may determine whether their transfer strategies pay off or leave them playing catch-up.
