Papers: Real Madrid open to Arsenal target Vinicius Jr leaving club

Real Madrid’s stance on Vinícius Júnior has shifted from stubborn resistance to reluctant pragmatism, with multiple outlets reporting the club is now open to letting the Brazilian forward leave this summer if no new contract can be agreed. Marca and ESPN both confirm that Madrid has tabled a final, non-negotiable contract renewal offer—one they have made clear will not be increased. The message is unambiguous: either the 26-year-old signs on Madrid’s terms, or he leaves. This stance marks a stark departure from previous summers, when the club’s reluctance to sell their prized asset bordered on obstinacy. Now, with the transfer window in full swing and Arsenal circling, Madrid’s position appears to have softened—at least enough to entertain the possibility of a sale.

The timing of this shift is no coincidence. Vinícius’s contract expires in 2027, and Madrid’s insistence on a long-term deal reflects their desire to avoid a potential Bosman scenario. Yet, with Arsenal ready to meet their valuation and the player himself increasingly frustrated by the lack of progress, Madrid’s leverage is eroding. The club’s willingness to listen to offers suggests they are preparing for the worst-case scenario: losing their star forward for nothing next summer. According to Sky Sports, Madrid’s final offer includes a base salary of €18m per year with performance-based bonuses that could push the total to €22m annually—terms Vinícius’s representatives have privately described as “unrealistic” given the player’s market value and Premier League wage scales.

Arsenal’s pursuit gains momentum—but obstacles remain

Arsenal’s pursuit of Vinícius has taken a decisive turn, with Mirror Football reporting that the club has agreed personal terms with the player. According to the outlet, Roc Nation—Vinícius’s representatives—have received a substantial offer from Arsenal, which they will use as leverage in ongoing negotiations with Madrid. The Gunners’ willingness to meet Madrid’s valuation, combined with their recent activity in the market, signals a serious intent to land their marquee target. Arsenal’s proposed structure includes a five-year deal with a reported base wage of £400,000 per week, rising to £500,000 with add-ons—a figure that would make him the club’s highest-paid player, surpassing Declan Rice’s reported £350,000 weekly earnings.

Yet, the deal is far from done. Vinícius’s contract talks with Madrid are ongoing, and the player’s future remains tied to their resolution. Arsenal’s financial constraints, exacerbated by their recent spending on Bruno Guimarães, add another layer of complexity. The club’s reported £77m bid for the Newcastle captain, which includes £5m in add-ons, has already stretched their resources. Adding Vinícius’s wages—reportedly among the highest in the Premier League—to the mix could force Arsenal to restructure their squad or explore part-exchange deals to balance the books. The Gunners’ recent £50m sale of Eddie Nketiah to Newcastle, for example, may provide some financial flexibility, but the net spend would still represent a significant outlay for a club that has historically prioritized wage discipline.

For now, Arsenal’s focus appears to be on finalizing Guimarães’s move, with a medical reportedly scheduled for next week. But Vinícius remains their top priority, and the club’s willingness to meet Madrid’s demands suggests they see him as the missing piece in their title-chasing puzzle. The potential arrival of both players would give Mikel Arteta a frontline trio of Guimarães, Declan Rice, and Vinícius—a combination that could transform Arsenal’s attacking dynamics, particularly if the Brazilian is deployed as a left-sided forward in Arteta’s preferred 4-3-3 system.

What comes next: Madrid’s options, Arsenal’s risks

The coming days will determine whether Vinícius ends up at the Emirates or remains in Madrid. If the player rejects Madrid’s final offer, the club could either extend negotiations or accept a lucrative bid from Arsenal. The Gunners, meanwhile, must decide whether to gamble on a player whose wage demands could destabilize their squad dynamics or risk losing him to a rival—likely Chelsea or Manchester United—if Madrid dig in their heels. Chelsea, in particular, have been linked with Vinícius in recent weeks, with reports suggesting they could table a bid in excess of £80m if Arsenal’s move stalls.

Arsenal’s financial prudence has been a hallmark of their summer, but Vinícius represents a significant gamble. The club’s recent form—including a 3-0 friendly win over MK Dons—has done little to ease concerns about their squad depth, particularly in attack. Adding a player of Vinícius’s calibre could transform their title ambitions, but it also risks overloading their wage structure and limiting their ability to address other areas of need. The Gunners have already committed to long-term deals for Rice and Gabriel Jesus, and the addition of Vinícius would push their total wage bill to among the highest in the Premier League—a factor that could complicate future transfer business.

Madrid, for their part, face a dilemma. Selling Vinícius now would net them a substantial fee, but it would also signal a failure to retain one of their most marketable assets. The club’s recent transfer activity—including their pursuit of young talent such as Endrick’s potential successor—suggests they are preparing for life without him, but the emotional and commercial fallout of such a move could be significant. The loss of Vinícius would also leave a void in Madrid’s left-wing options, with Federico Valverde likely to be deployed centrally and Rodrygo or Arribas filling in on the right.

One thing is clear: the next 72 hours will be decisive. If Madrid’s final offer is rejected, Arsenal could swoop in with a completed deal, reshaping their squad and their title hopes in one fell swoop. If not, the summer’s biggest transfer saga will drag on, leaving both clubs—and Vinícius himself—in limbo. For Arsenal, the stakes could not be higher: securing Vinícius would represent their boldest move in a decade, but failure to do so could expose the fragility of their title ambitions.
