Papers: Turkish side eyeing shock Rashford move

Fenerbahçe’s audacious bid to hijack this summer’s transfer window with a blockbuster approach for Marcus Rashford underlines how quickly the market can pivot from predictable Premier League swaps to outright shocks. The Turkish giants are prepared to “break the bank” for the Manchester United forward, according to The Sun, a move that would dwarf even the most ambitious deals of the past two windows. With Newcastle already rejecting Arsenal’s £75 million opening offer for Bruno Guimarães and Chelsea fielding multiple enquiries for Mykhailo Mudryk, Tuesday’s headlines confirm that the summer’s most consequential transfers may yet arrive from outside the usual suspects. The Rashford saga also throws a spotlight on Fenerbahçe’s broader ambition: the club has been linked with a £50 million bid for Atalanta’s Rafael Leão, a move that would further cement their status as the Süper Lig’s most aggressive spenders.

Premier League’s midfield chessboard

The most immediate standoff is unfolding at St James’ Park, where Newcastle have rebuffed Arsenal’s £75 million first bid for Guimarães. The Times reports the Magpies’ stance is firm, leaving Arsenal to decide whether to raise their offer to the £85-90 million range they are believed to be willing to pay or pursue alternatives. The Gunners, meanwhile, are circling Blackburn’s Igor Tyjón, a move that would continue their pattern of targeting young South American talent after the signings of Gabriel Jesus and Declan Rice. Arsenal’s scouting network has been particularly active in South America this summer, with their technical staff monitoring the progress of Paraguayan midfielder Adam Bareiro at Club Libertad.

At Chelsea, Mudryk’s future remains unsettled. The Daily Mail notes the winger has drawn three Premier League approaches since his return to training, including bids from Brighton and Aston Villa, while club defenders Axel Disasi and Benoît Badiashile continue to attract interest from Napoli and two other English clubs. The Blues’ willingness to listen to offers suggests a reshuffle is underway, even if the club insists no final decisions have been made. Disasi, in particular, has been a target for Crystal Palace and West Ham, with the latter prepared to table an initial £45 million offer before potential add-ons.

Premier League clubs circle outside the top six

Liverpool’s stance on Cody Gakpo is unambiguous: the club has no intention of selling despite Tottenham’s declared interest. The Daily Mail’s report removes any doubt over the forward’s future at Anfield, at least for now. Manchester United, by contrast, are preparing to move on several players. Chido Obi Martin is set to leave on loan, with Championship clubs Leeds and Leicester among the clubs monitoring his availability, while Toby Collyer has been told he can depart permanently. Villa’s reported £30 million pursuit of Barcelona’s Marc Bernal adds another dimension, targeting a young midfielder who could slot into Steven Gerrard’s rebuilding project. Bernal’s profile—capable of playing as a double pivot or in a box-to-box role—aligns with Villa’s need for midfield versatility.

Everton’s Tim Iroegbunam is emerging as a sought-after commodity, drawing interest from both domestic rivals and clubs abroad. The midfielder’s rise reflects a broader trend: Premier League fringe players are increasingly prized assets, especially when clubs seek budget-friendly alternatives to established stars. Championship sides like Ipswich and Southampton have also been linked with the 21-year-old, whose contract runs until 2028.

Fenerbahçe’s Rashford gamble

Fenerbahçe’s willingness to “break the bank” for Rashford is the headline-grabber. The move would represent a seismic shift in European transfer strategy, prioritising marquee names over financial prudence. While the bid’s viability remains uncertain—Rashford’s wage demands are reported to be in excess of £300,000 per week, and United’s reluctance to lose a homegrown talent are formidable obstacles—it signals a new phase in Turkish football’s ambition. Clubs like Galatasaray and Beşiktaş have long chased big names, but Fenerbahçe’s targeting of a Premier League frontline player underscores how far the Süper Lig is willing to go to disrupt the established order. Their recent recruitment of Edimilson Fernandes from Mainz for £12 million suggests they are prepared to back up their ambitions with spending.

The backdrop to these machinations is a transfer window already defined by stubborn standoffs and late surges. Newcastle’s refusal to entertain Arsenal’s opening bid for Guimarães suggests a market where sellers hold the upper hand, while Chelsea’s open-door policy on Mudryk hints at a club preparing for life beyond the Todd Boehly era. Liverpool’s steadfastness on Gakpo contrasts with Manchester United’s pragmatism, revealing divergent philosophies even among clubs with similar resources. The Rashford pursuit, if it materialises, would be the clearest sign yet that this summer’s market is not just about incremental upgrades but about rewriting the script entirely. Whether it succeeds or collapses under the weight of its own ambition remains to be seen, but the attempt alone has already shifted the conversation from incremental deals to headline-grabbing gambles.
