Paredes 10-game ban: FIFA hits Argentina with £235k fine

FIFA has delivered its verdict on Argentina’s post-World Cup conduct, imposing a 10-match ban on Leandro Paredes and a £235,647 fine after the chaotic scenes in New York and the Falklands banner display in Atlanta. The sanctions mark the most severe punishment handed to a single player in the aftermath of the 2026 tournament, with Paredes’ suspension set to derail his club season and Argentina’s preparations for upcoming qualifiers.

Paredes’ ban and the final-day fracas

Paredes was shown a red card for violent conduct at the end of Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain, but FIFA’s disciplinary committee escalated the punishment after reviewing footage of his role in the full-time brawl. The midfielder was filmed grabbing Spain’s Eric García by the throat and shoving substitute Gavi to the ground, actions that breached multiple articles of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. His 10-match ban surpasses the seven-game suspension given to teammate Nahuel Molina, who attempted to knock over Rodri during the melee, and eclipses the one-match penalties issued to Thiago Almada and Gavi. The committee also handed Argentina head coach Roberto Ayala a three-match ban for attempting to strike Dani Olmo.

The severity reflects FIFA’s zero-tolerance stance on post-match violence, particularly when it spills into public view. Paredes’ suspension will force him to miss at least the opening 10 games of his club season, a timeline that could extend if appeals are unsuccessful. The ban also raises questions over Argentina’s ability to field a competitive side in upcoming World Cup qualifiers, though FIFA has not yet specified which matches the suspension applies to.

The Falklands fine and political messaging

Argentina’s £235,647 fine stems from two breaches: the display of a “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” banner after their 2-1 semi-final win over England, and discriminatory chants by supporters. FIFA’s code explicitly prohibits political messaging at matches, and the Falklands banner—left on the pitch for several minutes before being folded and handed to staff—violated Article 13(2)(c) of the Disciplinary Code. The fine also covers “team misconduct” (Article 14(5)) and “discrimination and racist abuse” (Article 15), with $100,000 earmarked for anti-discrimination campaigns and another $100,000 suspended pending compliance.

The punishment underscores FIFA’s willingness to penalise political statements, even when they resonate with domestic audiences. Argentina face FIFA proceedings over Falklands banner and World Cup final actions, a pattern that has drawn criticism from some quarters but aligns with FIFA’s strict enforcement of its rules. The ruling also follows earlier scrutiny of Argentina’s conduct, including calls for an investigation into the post-final altercations after disgraceful Argentina throw punches at Spain players.

Broader implications for Argentina and FIFA

The sanctions extend beyond individual punishments, with Argentina ordered to play their next two home matches behind closed doors—though one of these is suspended. The financial penalty, the largest imposed on a national team in recent tournaments, sends a clear signal that FIFA will not tolerate breaches of its disciplinary code, regardless of the context. The $321,000 fine also includes a probationary period, meaning further sanctions could follow if Argentina repeat offenses.

For Argentina, the fallout risks overshadowing their World Cup campaign, which saw them reach the final despite a red card for Enzo Fernández in the group stage. The suspensions and fines could disrupt their rhythm in upcoming qualifiers, while the political dimension of the Falklands banner may reignite debates about FIFA’s role in policing national symbols. The ruling also contrasts with Gavi’s public plea for leniency toward Paredes, highlighting the tension between on-field aggression and FIFA’s disciplinary framework.

With the dust settling on the most controversial World Cup in recent memory, FIFA’s decision leaves Argentina facing a steep climb to restore their reputation. The sanctions—particularly Paredes’ ban—will dominate headlines in the coming weeks, but the broader question remains: can football govern itself when politics and passion collide?
