Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 Aston Villa: Desire Doue scores UEFA Super Cup winner as Brian Madjo strikes on debut – Sky Sports

Paris Saint-Germain claimed the UEFA Super Cup with a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa in Salzburg, but the night belonged to Brian Madjo. The 17-year-old striker, who had waited 212 days for his competitive debut, announced himself in emphatic fashion with a first-half strike that briefly stunned the holders.

A debut to remember

Madjo’s arrival at Villa Park in January was supposed to be a statement of intent, but FIFA’s registration block left him sidelined until an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) succeeded this month. When Unai Emery named him in the starting XI against PSG, the teenager repaid the faith immediately. His goal—canceling out Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s opener—was a composed finish after holding off Willian Pacho, a display that drew praise from pundits and set the tone for a performance far beyond his years.

The teenager’s inclusion had been a legal marathon. Born in London, Madjo’s eligibility for England’s youth teams complicated FIFA’s initial stance, despite his three Luxembourg caps in friendlies. Villa’s appeal hinged on EU transfer exemptions, a battle resolved only eight days before the match. His four pre-season goals had already hinted at potential, but Salzburg provided the stage to prove it.

Doue’s late dagger

PSG’s winner arrived in the 58th minute, when Desire Doue—another academy graduate—finished clinically after a VAR check confirmed offside play had been overturned. The goal underscored PSG’s pedigree, but it also exposed Villa’s defensive fragility in transition. Emery’s side had matched their hosts for large spells, with Madjo’s energy and link-up play offering glimpses of what might come if the teenager’s registration hurdles are cleared permanently.

Villa’s defeat came amid fresh transfer speculation, with reports suggesting Liverpool are preparing to rival Arsenal’s pursuit of Ezri Konsa. The England defender’s future has become a focal point this summer, with Villa’s defensive reshaping still incomplete. Meanwhile, Konsa’s omission from the Super Cup squad hinted at Emery’s long-term planning, though the club’s need to balance ambition with pragmatism remains acute.

What comes next

For Madjo, the road ahead is clear: sustain this level and force his way into Emery’s first-team plans. His physical profile and technical composure mark him as a rare prospect, one who could feature prominently if Watkins or Abraham depart. PSG, meanwhile, will view the result as a reminder of their depth, even as they navigate a transitional summer under Luis Enrique.

The Super Cup may be a minor trophy, but its narrative was anything but. Madjo’s debut ended an eight-month drought with a performance that transcended his age, while Doue’s winner underlined PSG’s knack for decisive moments. Villa, though disappointed, can take heart from the strides made by their young striker—a player whose path to Salzburg was as unconventional as his impact.

For Konsa, the coming weeks will determine whether he remains at Villa or becomes the latest in a line of top-four defenders lured away by rivals. The Konsa saga, like Madjo’s registration battle, is a microcosm of the Premier League’s relentless churn. One thing is certain: Emery’s squad is evolving, and the Super Cup’s lessons—both tactical and human—will shape the months ahead.
