Pep Guardiola admits he ‘loves’ ex-wife Cristina but they ‘lost passion’

Pep Guardiola has broken his silence on the end of his Manchester City tenure, revealing in a new Prime Video documentary that exhaustion, personal strain and the breakdown of his marriage left him questioning whether he could ever return to management. The four-part series, A Beautiful Obsession, offers an unfiltered glimpse into his final two seasons at the club, where his emotional investment in both the players and his private life reached a breaking point. The documentary, which premiered on 10 September 2025, includes footage from his final months in charge, including dressing-room exchanges that reveal the psychological toll of his role.

What the documentary reveals about Guardiola’s exit

In his first public comments since leaving City after a decade and 20 trophies, Guardiola admitted the job’s demands had become unsustainable. “I quit feeling tired and with issues to address following the separation with my wife Cristina Serra at the end of 2024,” he said. The reason for their split, he told his players, was that “they lost the passion.” The documentary captures a moment in December 2024 when, after a 2-0 Champions League defeat to Juventus, Guardiola made an unusual confession in the dressing room: “Guys, I want to confess something. I’m f***ing divorced from the most beautiful woman in your planet. It’s my wife, my…”

His departure wasn’t just about football. Guardiola described the role as so draining that it left him questioning his future in the dugout. “I need to refresh many things that happened in my personal life,” he said. “I need to find myself a little bit in different things. Especially sitting and seeing the time go by.” He invoked the Catalan word badar—to sit idly—and declared it one of his immediate priorities. “Life is not just football right? It should be sleep until 10 one day. And go to the cafeteria or take two days off. Walk? I dunno, do whatever you want.” The documentary includes footage of him sitting in silence at a café in Manchester, a deliberate contrast to the high-energy routines he once enforced at City.

Why this matters now

The timing of the documentary’s release is significant. Guardiola, 55, has spent the past year stepping away from the relentless cycle of training schedules, tactical reviews and media obligations that defined his City tenure. His comments suggest a man reassessing priorities beyond trophies and press conferences. “I don’t even know myself what I’m going to do, honestly,” he admitted. “But for sure I will not be…it will be difficult to come back. That’s my feeling today.” The documentary’s producers have confirmed that the interviews were conducted between March and August 2025, during a period when Guardiola was largely incommunicado.

The documentary also exposes the emotional extremes of his leadership. It shows him orchestrating pre-match hugging sessions to foster cohesion, only to unleash furious criticism when results faltered. After defeats, he confessed to feeling “so f***ing tired” that he sometimes wanted to “kill” his players—a rare glimpse of vulnerability from a coach whose intensity is often mythologised. These moments underscore how his personal and professional lives became intertwined, a dynamic that ultimately contributed to his decision to step away. The footage includes a dressing-room outburst after City’s 3-1 loss to Arsenal in the 2024-25 Premier League, where he was captured shouting at Rodri for a perceived lack of intensity.

What comes next for Guardiola

For now, Guardiola appears to be prioritising personal recovery over immediate career moves. His focus on simple pleasures—sleeping in, casual walks, unstructured time—contrasts sharply with the high-pressure environment he cultivated at City. “I don’t have time to read, to watch series, to travel,” he said. “It’s too much to be honest.” The documentary suggests he’s not ruling out a return entirely, but his tone implies any future role would require a fundamental shift in how he approaches the job. In one scene, he is seen reading a book in a Barcelona park, a stark departure from the meticulously scheduled days of his managerial career.

As for Manchester City, the documentary serves as both a tribute and a cautionary tale. It celebrates the club’s transformation under his guidance while highlighting the human cost of relentless ambition. Whether Guardiola ever manages again may depend on whether he can reconcile his love for football with the need for a life beyond it. For now, he’s embracing the stillness he once avoided. And in football, where obsession is often celebrated, that might be the most radical decision of all.
