‘Perfect ball’ | Nygren nods Celtic in front from superb delivery from Tierney

Celtic began their league campaign with a statement of intent at Parkhead on Monday night, as Benjamin Nygren’s first-half header in the 23rd minute gave the hosts the lead against Dundee. The goal arrived when Kieran Tierney’s cross found the teenager unmarked in the box. Nygren’s finish, a simple nod to goal, settled a nervy opening 20 minutes and provided a moment of clarity in an otherwise disjointed start to the season.

Celtic take control early

The opening exchanges were scrappy, Celtic struggling to impose their rhythm against a Dundee side organised in mid-block. Tierney, playing in a more advanced role than his usual left-back berth, drifted infield and delivered a first-time cross that evaded two defenders. Nygren, making only his second start for the club, arrived at the far post to meet the ball cleanly. His header was decisive, the ball arrowing past the stranded Dundee keeper. The goal was Celtic’s first of the season, and it arrived with a clarity that had been absent in pre-season.

The lead lasted just 12 minutes before Dundee equalised through a set-piece, but Celtic regained the advantage moments later when Nygren turned provider. His low cross found Kyogo Furuhashi, who converted with his weaker foot. The visitors regrouped, and a late chance fell to Dundee’s Ryan Sweeney, whose header rattled the crossbar. The final whistle confirmed a 2-2 draw, but Celtic will take encouragement from the way they wrestled back control after conceding.

Nygren’s moment to shine

Nygren’s goal was not just a personal milestone but a sign of Celtic’s intent under their new management. The 19-year-old, signed from Midtjylland in the summer, has been handed regular starts in attack, and his composure in front of goal suggests he is already adapting to the intensity of Scottish football. His movement to lose his marker and the precision of his header underlined his potential.

Tierney, playing in a fluid role, provided the perfect example of Celtic’s willingness to utilise their full-backs in advanced positions. His delivery was the difference, a reminder of the creativity he brings to the team even in unfamiliar roles. The partnership between the two has already shown promise, and if Nygren can replicate this performance regularly, Celtic’s attack will have added bite.

What comes next for both sides

For Celtic, the draw leaves them with a point from their opening fixture, but the performance offered glimpses of progress. The midfield struggled to impose themselves early on, and the defence looked vulnerable at set-pieces. However, the attacking intent was clear, and the introduction of Reo Hatate and Matt O’Riley in the second half added creativity. The bench will be a key source of solutions if Celtic are to mount a title challenge.

Dundee, meanwhile, will feel aggrieved to leave Glasgow with a share of the points. Their equaliser exposed Celtic’s defensive frailties, and their direct approach unsettled the hosts at times. A point in Glasgow is a credible result, and if they can tighten up defensively, they may yet prove difficult to shift in the early weeks of the campaign.

The stage is now set for Celtic’s next outing, with European football looming for the victors of their upcoming qualifier. The league campaign is long, but Monday’s performance suggested that Celtic have the personnel to compete at the top. Nygren’s header may not have secured all three points, but it marked the beginning of what could be a significant partnership at the heart of their attack.
