Pico Lopes and veterans ignite Shamrock Rovers as Egnatia put to the sword in Euro battle – Irish Independent

Shamrock Rovers turned the heat up on their European campaign with a commanding display against FK Egnatia, as Pico Lopes and a quartet of experienced heads led the line in Tallaght. The 3-0 victory not only kept Rovers in pole position in their Europa Conference League group but sent a clear signal to rivals that Pat Fenlon’s side are ready to fight for every point in the knockout stages.

A night of firepower and control

From the first whistle, Rovers asserted themselves with relentless pressing and incisive passing, and it was their veteran core that set the tempo. Pico Lopes, the 31-year-old forward with 12 caps for Cape Verde and over a decade of top-flight experience in Portugal and Greece, underlined his importance to the attack by scoring twice, while the midfield quartet of Rory Gaffney (34), Jack Byrne (32), Aaron Bolger (29), and Liam Scales (28) marshalled proceedings with composure and confidence. The visitors never looked like threatening the hosts’ goal, and by the hour mark, the game was effectively over.

The opening goal arrived in the 28th minute when Gaffney, drifting between the lines, played a first-time pass to Lopes, who finished low and hard past the advancing goalkeeper. The second followed just before half-time when a quick counter, initiated by Byrne’s interception in midfield, ended with Lopes slotting home from close range after a cut-back from Scales. The rout was completed in the 67th minute when substitute Danny Grant, introduced for the final half-hour, rounded the keeper and rolled the ball into the net to seal the win.

Why this matters now

With three wins from three in Group B, Rovers have now stretched their unbeaten run in European competition to eight matches, dating back to last season’s qualifying campaign—a sequence that includes victories over Aberdeen, Breiðablik, and Hibernians. The victory over Egnatia—who arrived in Dublin with just one point from their opening two fixtures—confirms Fenlon’s side as the early pace-setters, and leaves them on course for a seeded draw in the knockout rounds. More importantly, it showcases a squad that blends youthful energy with the steel of experience, a balance that has become the manager’s trademark.

For Egnatia, the defeat is their third in four games across all competitions, and leaves them needing a miracle in their final group fixture against a resurgent Villarreal to avoid an early exit. Their inability to handle Rovers’ physicality and quick transitions exposed frailties at the back, and with only one goal scored in their last three outings, questions will be asked of their attacking structure under manager Thomas Brdarić.

What comes next

Rovers now face a short turnaround before their next domestic fixture against Sligo Rovers on Saturday, but the Europa Conference League remains the priority. A draw in their final group game against Villarreal would still secure top spot, while a win would send a statement of intent ahead of the knockout rounds. Fenlon, however, will be keen to avoid complacency. “We know how quickly momentum can shift in these competitions,” he said after the game. “We’ll treat the next game with the same intensity, regardless of the opponent.”

For Egnatia, the focus shifts to regrouping and salvaging pride in their final group outing. With nothing but pride to play for, their challenge now is to restore some belief before the winter break, particularly after a campaign that has seen them concede 11 goals in five matches.

One thing is certain: Shamrock Rovers are building something real in Europe, and the rest of the continent is starting to take notice.
