Players union slams FIFA ‘abuse of power’ as UEFA doubles down on boycott

The standoff between world football’s governing bodies deepened on Thursday after FIFPRO, the global players’ union, accused Gianni Infantino of an “abuse of presidential power” and UEFA reaffirmed its boycott of FIFA tournaments. The escalation follows Infantino’s abrupt abandonment of plans to sell private stakes in a company set to run the World Cup, a move that triggered immediate backlash from Europe’s top football body and now threatens to unravel the legitimacy of FIFA’s leadership.

FIFPRO’s damning indictment of Infantino’s leadership

FIFPRO condemned the opacity surrounding Infantino’s World Cup stake sale plans and declared that no institution can restore confidence in a presidency that has itself dismantled the conditions upon which confidence depends. The union’s statement, issued late on Wednesday, went further than mere criticism, demanding legally binding engagement with players, voting rights on the FIFA council, and reforms to prevent any future leader from unilaterally imposing decisions on the game. It also warned FIFA against framing scrutiny as disloyalty, a thinly veiled rebuke to the governing body’s recent threats over attacks on its integrity.

The timing of FIFPRO’s intervention is critical. Infantino had just secured the full support of FIFA’s management board despite the collapse of his stake sale scheme, a decision that underscored the disconnect between FIFA’s leadership and its stakeholders. The union’s call for systemic change—rather than isolated concessions—signals that the crisis has moved beyond procedural disputes into a legitimacy struggle at the heart of world football. FIFPRO’s demands included legally-binding commitments to player representation and structural reforms that would prohibit any individual from driving unilateral decisions through the game, a direct challenge to the concentration of authority under Infantino’s tenure.

UEFA’s boycott holds firm as FA withdraws backing for Infantino

UEFA confirmed on Thursday that its boycott of FIFA tournaments remains in place, doubling down on demands for Infantino’s resignation. The European body’s stance contrasts sharply with FIFA’s internal show of support, exposing a widening rift that risks destabilising the sport’s governance ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The Football Association added to the pressure by formally announcing its intention to withdraw support for Infantino’s re-election, with a vote scheduled for March 2027.

The boycott, initially threatened during the stake sale saga, now appears to be a long-term strategy rather than a temporary protest. UEFA’s refusal to backtrack—despite FIFA’s management board endorsement of Infantino—suggests that European football’s hierarchy views the crisis as a fundamental challenge to its autonomy. The FA’s move, meanwhile, aligns it with UEFA’s hardline approach, though the practical implications for England’s participation in FIFA competitions remain unclear. The association’s decision follows internal consultations with the Premier League and the FA’s board, which concluded that continued backing for Infantino would undermine the integrity of England’s football governance structures.

What comes next: a governance reckoning or a prolonged standoff?

The immediate question is whether FIFA’s management board can sustain its backing for Infantino in the face of mounting opposition. The board’s statement of full support on Wednesday night provided no detail on how it reconciles the stake sale fiasco with FIFA’s stated commitment to transparency, leaving stakeholders to question the board’s own judgment. FIFPRO’s demands for structural reform—particularly voting rights for players and legal safeguards against unilateral decisions—point to a deeper crisis than a single failed policy.

UEFA’s boycott, now in its second phase, could escalate if FIFA fails to address the union’s concerns. The FA’s withdrawal of support for Infantino’s re-election introduces a new dynamic, as England’s absence from FIFA governance could weaken the president’s global backing. Yet the path forward remains murky: FIFA’s statutes provide no clear mechanism for removing a president mid-term, and Infantino’s allies on the management board have shown no inclination to reconsider their position. The board’s composition, which includes representatives from Asia, Africa, and South America, has historically aligned closely with Infantino’s agenda, raising questions about whether internal pressure can force a reversal.

The coming months will test whether this confrontation forces a reckoning in FIFA’s corridors or calcifies into a prolonged standoff. What is certain is that the players—through FIFPRO—and Europe’s governing body are no longer willing to accept the status quo. The question now is whether FIFA’s leadership will blink first, or if the sport’s stakeholders will accept a future where its top authority operates without their trust.

One thing is clear: the era of unchecked presidential power in FIFA is under siege. Whether that siege leads to reform or retrenchment will define the next chapter of world football’s governance. The stakes extend beyond personnel: if Infantino survives, the precedent set by his management of the stake sale crisis could embolden future leaders to pursue similarly opaque financial strategies. Conversely, if the opposition forces structural change, it may redefine the balance of power between FIFA’s presidency and its constituent bodies for decades to come.
