Pre-season: Newcastle vs Everton team news LIVE!

As the pre-season friendly between Newcastle United and Everton unfolds at Murrayfield Stadium, the focus has already shifted beyond the pitch. The fixture itself is a low-key affair in competitive terms, but the backdrop is anything but: Everton’s Martin Sherif is facing 61 FA betting charges, a saga that could reshape the club’s disciplinary narrative before the Premier League curtain rises.

Why this pre-season clash matters more than most

Newcastle’s decision to stage a pre-season match in Edinburgh is a calculated gamble. The Magpies are banking on early momentum, but the fixture is overshadowed by Everton’s ongoing integrity crisis. Sherif, a 20-year-old striker who joined Everton’s academy at 13, has been charged with placing 61 bets on football matches between 20 November 2024 and 12 February 2026. The FA’s announcement landed just days before this friendly, forcing Everton to confront a reputational storm that no pre-season schedule can outrun.

Everton’s Carabao Cup second-round draw takes place tonight, and the club’s ability to project stability—on and off the pitch—will be scrutinised. Newcastle, meanwhile, are using this match to test fringe players and youngsters, but the real story is how Everton navigate a week that has already exposed their vulnerabilities. The timing of the charges, arriving during pre-season when clubs are attempting to present a united front, amplifies the pressure on a club already contending with stadium redevelopment uncertainty at Goodison Park.

Sherif’s charges: the legal and sporting fallout

The FA’s statement outlines a precise timeline: Sherif is accused of breaching Rule E1.2 over 61 bets, spanning 16 months. His response window closes on Monday, 17 August, meaning the case could spill into the Premier League season. Sherif’s career has been a series of setbacks—hamstring injuries, loan spells at Rotherham and Port Vale (where he scored four goals in League One), and a brief senior debut under David Moyes in February 2025. Now, his future is tied to a disciplinary process that could deliver a ban before he’s even nailed down a first-team shirt.

For Everton, the Sherif case is a microcosm of deeper issues. The club’s recent Goodison Park uncertainty—amid stadium redevelopment—compounds the distraction. While Newcastle treat this as a warm-up, Everton are fighting battles on multiple fronts: sporting, legal, and structural. The forward’s loan spells at Rotherham United and Port Vale last season, where he scored twice in each spell despite relegation with the latter, underscore his potential but also the inconsistency that has marked his development.

What’s next for both clubs

Newcastle’s pre-season is about fine-tuning under Eddie Howe, but the Sherif saga forces Everton to confront a different kind of preparation. The Toffees’ Carabao Cup draw tonight will be scrutinised for signs of cohesion, but the real test is whether they can insulate the squad from external noise. Sherif’s case is a reminder that pre-season isn’t just about fitness—it’s about clarity. The club’s response to the charges, due within five days, will set the tone for how seriously they treat the allegations.

For Newcastle, the match itself is secondary. Howe will rotate heavily, but the optics matter: a strong showing in Edinburgh could reinforce the narrative of a club on the rise. Everton, meanwhile, must hope that by the time the Premier League kicks off, Sherif’s case is resolved—or at least contained. The club’s ability to move forward will hinge on more than tactics; it will require damage control. The FA’s charges against Sherif aren’t just a legal footnote—they’re a warning that even in August, the weight of the season to come is already being felt, particularly for a club navigating multiple crises.

As the match progresses, the scoreboard will flicker between 0-0 and 2-1, but the real narrative is written off the pitch. Everton’s integrity is under the microscope, and Newcastle’s pre-season is a sideshow to a story that refuses to stay in the shadows. The FA’s charges against Sherif aren’t just a legal footnote—they’re a reminder that pre-season narratives are increasingly shaped by off-field developments, where the consequences of player actions can ripple far beyond the training ground.
