Precise faces More Thunder in Prix Jacques le Marois

The Prix Jacques Le Marois returns to Deauville on Sunday with a field stacked with Group 1 pedigree, headlined by Aidan O’Brien’s defending champion Precise. The four-time Group 1-winning filly steps into open company once more, fresh from two narrow defeats to Blue Bolt, but with Ryan Moore reunited in the irons. She faces a trio of challengers—More Thunder, Zeus Olympios, and Rayif—each with their own claims to Group 1 success, while the French-trained Rayif carries local hopes after a troubled Prix Jean Prat.

Aidan O’Brien’s reigning queen faces a mile of redemption

Precise arrives at Deauville as the market leader, her reputation built on victories in the Irish 1000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes, but her transition to open-age racing has been uneven. Two defeats to Blue Bolt—first in the Coronation Stakes, then again in the Falmouth Stakes—have exposed minor frailties, yet Moore’s presence suggests confidence remains high. The filly’s allowance over the mile could prove pivotal; she has never raced beyond seven furlongs in Group 1 company, and the extra ground may suit her stamina profile better than her rivals realise. O’Brien’s record in this race is formidable—he saddled Alpha Centauri to victory in 2018 and has since claimed two renewals with Hermosa and then last year’s winner, Via Sistina. A second consecutive triumph would cement his dominance in a race that has become a Ballydoyle stronghold.

More Thunder and Zeus Olympios seek to rewrite Ascot’s script

More Thunder arrives with a point to prove. Karl Burke’s colt was second to Blue Bolt in both the Irish 2000 Guineas and the St James’s Palace Stakes, but his form has been overshadowed by the Juddmonte star’s rise. At Deauville, he faces a different dynamic: a mile, not a mile and a quarter, and a field without Blue Bolt. His last outing, a close second in the Summer Mile at Ascot, hinted at unfinished business, and with Sam James aboard, he has the tactical nous to exploit any hesitation from Precise. Zeus Olympios, meanwhile, was emphatic in that Summer Mile, streaking clear under James after tracking the leaders. William Haggas’s colt has the pedigree—sired by Olympic Glory—and the momentum, but he has never won at this level. A victory here would mark a significant step forward for a yard that has steadily climbed the Group 1 ladder.

Rayif’s bounce-back bid and the French wildcard

Rayif represents the strongest French challenge, fresh from a Group 1 win in the Prix Jean Prat, though his only defeat this season came as a 6/4 favourite in that same race. Mickael Barzalona’s mount has already proven his mile credentials with a victory in the French 2000 Guineas, and the step back up to a mile could restore his confidence. The Deauville crowd will be behind him, but his recent form is inconsistent. If he can recapture his best, he may yet trouble the outsiders, particularly if the pace frays early. The remaining runners—including the Group 3 scorer The Secret Adversary—add depth, but none have the profile to unsettle the leading contenders.

The tactical shape of the race hinges on whether Precise can dictate terms. Moore may attempt to box in More Thunder or Zeus Olympios, forcing them wide and into a chasing position. If the pace is steady, Precise’s finishing kick could prove decisive; if it’s too strong, the race may turn into a sprint finish where Rayif or The Secret Adversary could spring a surprise. O’Brien’s record suggests caution, but Precise’s recent defeats have exposed a vulnerability to front-running tactics. The winner will likely need to overcome at least one rival in the final furlong, where Moore’s experience in tight finishes may count for everything.

Sunday’s renewal is a clash of ambition and redemption. Precise seeks to silence doubts, More Thunder and Zeus Olympios aim to erase Ascot’s memory, and Rayif hopes to prove his Group 1 form was no fluke. With Sky Sports Racing broadcasting live, the stage is set for a mile of high-class attrition—where one misstep could cost a fortune, and one bold move could secure a champion.
