Quevin Castro’s death: West Brom’s tragedy and the forgotten crisis in football

Quevin Castro’s death at 25 is not just a personal tragedy—it is a systemic failure. The former West Brom midfielder collapsed during a pre-season friendly in Lisbon on Saturday and died in hospital the following morning. He was playing for Real Sport Clube, a third-tier side, against Estrela da Amadora. Castro had made only two senior appearances for West Brom, but his death has exposed the fragility of football’s cardiac health protocols and the financial precarity that leaves players vulnerable long after their careers stall.

The collapse and the silence that followed

Castro fell during the first half of a friendly at the Estadio das Seixas. The Lisbon Football Association confirmed his death the next day. Real Sport Clube described him as “an integral part of our sporting family,” while West Brom issued a statement expressing devastation and announcing a tribute in his memory. These reactions are standard, but they cannot obscure the deeper questions: why did a 25-year-old collapse on a football pitch? Why did it happen in a friendly, where medical oversight is often reduced? And why, in an era of hyper-professionalism, do players still face such risks without adequate long-term support?

The answers lie in football’s layered failures. Cardiac screening in football is inconsistent. Clubs prioritise elite academies and first teams, leaving lower-league and non-contracted players to navigate a patchwork of medical checks. Castro’s career path—West Brom, loans at Burton, Notts County, Gateshead, York City, and a return to Portugal—mirrors that of countless journeymen. Each move brought new medical assessments, but none guaranteed continuity of care. When players leave clubs, their health records often vanish with them. The system treats them as expendable once their market value fades.

The forgotten crisis: cardiac arrests in football

Castro’s death is not an isolated incident. In 2023, Jamal Musiala revealed he had collapsed twice during matches due to an unspecified health issue, prompting his club to issue a public update. Musiala’s case highlighted how even elite players can face invisible threats, but the risks escalate for those outside the top tiers. Lower-league clubs operate with tighter budgets, meaning fewer medical staff, less advanced equipment, and fewer safeguards. A friendly match in Portugal—where Castro was playing—is less likely to have the same emergency protocols as a Premier League fixture.

Football’s cardiac crisis extends beyond the pitch. Players who suffer cardiac arrests often face long recoveries, financial instability, and career-ending uncertainty. The lack of a unified registry for cardiac incidents in football means trends go unnoticed until a high-profile case emerges. Clubs and leagues treat each collapse as an anomaly rather than part of a systemic pattern. Until that changes, players will remain at risk.

The financial and cultural pressures that deepen the risk

Castro’s journey through English football’s lower divisions reflects the brutal economics of the game. He joined West Brom in 2021, made two appearances, and spent time on loan before leaving for York City in 2023. His move to Portugal last summer was a step down, but it was also a chance to restart his career. For players like Castro, every contract is a gamble. A single injury or health scare can derail years of progress. When clubs release players, they rarely provide post-career medical support. The assumption is that players will find new clubs or adapt, but the reality is far harsher.

Cultural attitudes in football exacerbate the problem. Players are conditioned to push through pain, to ignore symptoms, and to prioritise performance over health. A culture that glorifies resilience often dismisses legitimate concerns until it’s too late. Castro’s collapse during a friendly—where intensity is lower than in competitive matches—suggests that even routine exertion can trigger a crisis. The fact that it happened in Portugal, where medical standards may not match those in England’s top divisions, underscores how global football’s inequalities leave players exposed.

West Brom’s tribute on Sunday—a minute’s applause in the 25th minute and black armbands—is a necessary gesture, but it is not enough. The club’s statement called Castro’s death “untimely,” but the tragedy is that it was predictable. Football’s governing bodies must mandate universal cardiac screening, ensure continuity of medical records for all players, and fund long-term health support for those who leave the game. Until then, players will continue to pay the price.

Quevin Castro’s death should force football to confront its blind spots. The game’s obsession with spectacle and profit has created a system where players’ lives are treated as secondary to results. The next time a player collapses, the question will not be whether it could happen again, but when—and how many more will be left unprotected.
