Rangers 1-1 Jagiellonia Bialystok (2-3 on aggregate): Derek McInnes’ side out of Europa League qualifying – Sky Sports

Rangers’ Europa League ambitions ended in Bialystok on Thursday as Jagiellonia salvaged a 1-1 draw to progress 3-2 on aggregate, leaving Derek McInnes’ side on the outside of the third qualifying round looking in. The result caps a frustrating week for the Light Blues, who had twice led through Cyriel Dessers before conceding late equalisers in both legs. With European football slipping from their grasp, the focus now shifts to how McInnes rebuilds for a season that already feels like a step back.

How the tie turned: two leads, two late slips

Rangers began brightly in Poland, Dessers converting a first-half penalty after a foul on Ryan Kent. The visitors doubled their advantage just after the break when Dessers struck again, this time from open play. But Jagiellonia, who had lost the first leg 1-0 at Ibrox, responded with a goal of their own in the 76th minute, pulling a goal back through a set-piece. The visitors held firm for long spells, yet the tie remained finely poised until the 88th minute when substitute Bartosz Jaroszek levelled the score. The 1-1 draw meant Jagiellonia’s away goal counted, and Rangers’ Europa League campaign was over.

What this elimination means for Rangers

The defeat is a setback for a club chasing Champions League football and a top-six finish domestically. Rangers had not lost a European tie at this stage since 2019, when they fell to Legia Warsaw in qualifying. McInnes’ side now face a summer of reflection: their attacking output, defensive organisation, and squad depth will all be scrutinised. With the Scottish Premiership and League Cup still to play for, the priority is to regroup quickly and avoid a repeat of last season’s inconsistency. The Europa League exit also means no guaranteed revenue from UEFA’s competition, a factor that could influence transfer planning.

Tactical snapshot: pressing problems and late fragility

Rangers dominated possession in both legs but struggled to break down a compact Jagiellonia side. Their early penalty and second-half strike masked deeper issues: a lack of incisive passing in midfield and a defence exposed by aerial deliveries. The visitors’ pressing traps worked intermittently, yet they were repeatedly caught out by long balls into the box. In the 76th and 88th minutes, Jagiellonia exploited exactly those weaknesses, turning the tie on its head. McInnes will need to address those defensive transitions if Rangers are to compete consistently in Europe next season.

For Jagiellonia, the draw represents a rare European high. The Polish side travel to Glasgow with a spring in their step, knowing they can frustrate bigger names. Their manager’s pragmatic approach paid dividends, while Rangers’ profligacy in front of goal—despite creating chances—will linger in the memory. The result is a reminder that in European football, no lead is safe until the final whistle.

With the domestic season approaching, Rangers cannot afford to dwell on what might have been. The Europa League door has closed, but the window for progress remains open—if McInnes can learn the right lessons from Bialystok.
