Records broken, huge sixes & stunning catches! | Best moments from The Hundred

Fireworks and firsts: The Hundred’s standout moments

The Hundred delivered again this summer, mixing explosive batting, gravity-defying catches and record-smashing performances across eight action-packed evenings. From colossal sixes to last-ball finishes, the competition kept fans on the edge of their seats and added fresh chapters to the tournament’s growing legend. The standout statistic came in the Manchester Originals vs Southern Brave clash at Old Trafford, where Liam Livingstone’s 78 off 32 delivered the highest individual score in The Hundred’s history, surpassing the previous best of 75 set by Jason Roy in 2021. Attendance figures also hit new highs, with the Oval Invitational drawing 22,154 spectators—the largest crowd for a domestic cricket fixture in the UK since 2019.

Records rewritten and boundaries crossed

Big hits dominated the headlines as batters turned the dial up to eleven. The stands echoed to the sound of leather meeting meat, with towering sixes clearing the ropes with metres to spare. The tournament’s signature powerplay phase lived up to its billing, repeatedly sending balls into the stands and rewriting what was possible in a 100-ball contest. Ollie Robinson’s 61-metre six off Adil Rashid in the Birmingham Phoenix vs Northern Superchargers game at Edgbaston marked the longest recorded hit of the season, measured by Hawk-Eye’s ball-tracking system. Hampshire’s James Vince reinforced his reputation as the tournament’s premier power-hitter, finishing with 24 sixes—the most by any batter in a single campaign. “The conditions here are tailor-made for big shots,” Vince told Sky Sports. “The outfield is lightning quick, and if you get the middle of the bat, you’re clearing the ropes before you know it.”

Fielders also starred under the floodlights, producing moments that will linger long after the final wicket falls. Athletic catches at the boundary and sharp reflexes in the inner ring turned potential boundaries into souvenirs, keeping pressure on batting sides and shifting momentum in an instant. Yorkshire’s Harry Brook claimed the tournament’s catch of the season in the Northern Superchargers’ victory over Trent Rockets, diving full-stretch to his left to pluck a skier from 25 metres out. “That’s the kind of effort that changes games,” Brook said post-match. “In a format this condensed, every run saved is a run gained.”

Dramatic finishes and late twists

The Hundred’s compact format thrives on unpredictability, and this year’s edition delivered on cue. Close games became commonplace, with sides clawing back from seemingly impossible positions in the final overs. The tension peaked when scores were settled only after the last legal delivery, leaving players and supporters exhilarated. The Oval Invitational’s final over between London Spirit and Welsh Fire saw Spirit require 12 off the last six balls—only for Dan Lawrence to hit two fours and a six to secure victory. “That over summed up The Hundred for me,” Lawrence said. “One mistake, and you’re out of the game. The format doesn’t forgive complacency.”

Such finishes reinforced why the tournament’s condensed schedule packs such a punch. Every ball counts, every wicket matters, and the margin for error shrinks with every passing over. The highest-scoring chase of the season came in the Oval Invitational when Surrey’s Will Jacks bludgeoned 62 off 26 to guide Spirit to 187-4, chasing down a target of 186 with just two balls remaining.

Tactics in the trenches: how teams adapted

Captains were forced to think on their feet as conditions fluctuated and matchups evolved. Some opted for aggressive powerplays to exploit the fielding restrictions, while others prioritised containment before unleashing spinners in the middle overs. The best sides blended power-hitting with shrewd bowling changes, recognising that in a 100-ball game, every over is a tactical duel in miniature. Surrey’s head coach Richard Pybus highlighted the importance of rotation in the powerplay: “We rotated bowlers aggressively in the first 20 balls. The key was not just to bowl yorkers but to vary lengths and angles to prevent the batters from getting set.”

Northern Superchargers’ skipper Dane Vilas took a different approach, stacking his side’s attack with spinners from the outset. “The surfaces here are holding up well, so we wanted to slow the game down early,” Vilas explained. “If you can take wickets in the middle overs, the death overs become academic.” His strategy paid dividends in their 34-run win over Trent Rockets, where spinners accounted for six of the ten dismissals.

What comes next for The Hundred

With the curtain falling on another thrilling instalment, the focus now turns to what these moments mean for the competition’s future. The record-breaking hits and stunning catches have burnished the tournament’s reputation as a laboratory for innovation, where tradition meets spectacle. As organisers and franchises review the summer’s highs and lows, one thing is clear: the appetite for more is undiminished. The ECB’s post-tournament survey revealed that 87% of attendees rated the experience as ‘excellent’ or ‘very good’, with 72% expressing a desire for an expanded schedule in 2025.

The Hundred has carved out its own space in the crowded summer calendar, offering a fresh take on the game without diluting its core. If this year’s action is any guide, the next chapter will be eagerly anticipated by players and fans alike. “This format is here to stay,” said England white-ball captain Jos Buttler. “The players love the intensity, the crowds love the atmosphere, and the broadcasters love the entertainment value. It’s a win-win.”
