Reijnders £50m exit: City’s flawed summer spending revealed

Manchester City’s summer transfer strategy is unravelling before it has even settled. Twelve months after paying £46.5m for Tijjani Reijnders, the Dutch midfielder is on the brink of a £50m exit to Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah, a move that exposes the fragility of Pep Guardiola’s midfield overhaul and the club’s flawed recruitment.

A year of misfiring ambition

Reijnders’ departure crystallises the contradictions in City’s summer spending. The club arrived at the Etihad with a clear plan to refresh the squad, but the execution has been chaotic. A £46.5m outlay on a player who has managed just seven goals in 50 appearances—including a dwindling role under Guardiola—now looks like a miscalculation. His standing XI status by the season’s end, with Bernardo Silva and Rodri preferred in midfield, underlined his redundancy in a team that once prided itself on depth.

The situation is even more stark when set against City’s other moves. The £116m capture of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, while ambitious, has done little to resolve the midfield puzzle. Anderson’s admission that he has watched City since Sergio Agüero’s title-winning strike in 2012 may be flattering, but his arrival does not yet justify the outlay. The new manager, Enzo Maresca, has inherited a squad still in flux, with Rodri’s future unsettled and Anderson yet to prove he can fill the void left by Kevin De Bruyne’s departure.

City’s pursuit of Enzo Fernández and Ayyoub Bouaddi suggests they remain in the market for midfield talent, but Reijnders’ sale—potentially for £50m—highlights the cost of their indecision. The club’s summer spending spree, once framed as a bold step forward, now reads as a series of reactive gambles.

The Saudi factor: profit over prestige

Al Qadsiah’s interest in Reijnders is a product of the Saudi Pro League’s relentless spending, but it also reveals City’s willingness to cash in when the market demands it. The £50m fee, a tidy return on a £46.5m investment, is a rare win in a transfer window that has otherwise been defined by uncertainty. Brendan Rodgers, the former Liverpool and Leicester manager now in charge at Al Qadsiah, is overseeing a project that has already lured high-profile names, and Reijnders fits the profile of a player seeking a fresh start.

City’s decision to allow Reijnders to leave reflects a broader shift in their approach. The club’s traditional model of buying low and selling high has been disrupted by their own spending, leaving them exposed when form or tactics turn against a player. Reijnders’ exit, while financially prudent, underscores the volatility of a squad that Guardiola once moulded into a near-unbreakable machine.

The move also raises questions about Maresca’s long-term vision. The new manager has spoken of Anderson’s versatility and Rodri’s world-class status, but the squad’s composition remains a work in progress. City’s ability to balance ambition with pragmatism will be tested in the coming months, particularly if Rodri departs for Barcelona—a scenario that could force Maresca to rethink his midfield options entirely.

Guardiola’s shadow and the road ahead

The Reijnders saga is a reminder of the challenges facing any manager stepping into Guardiola’s shadow. The Catalan’s legacy at City is one of tactical perfection and squad harmony, traits that have been harder to replicate under his successors. Maresca’s early interactions with Anderson suggest a willingness to adapt, but the squad’s current instability—exacerbated by Reijnders’ impending exit—demands urgent clarity.

City’s transfer business this summer has been defined by bold strokes and uncertain outcomes. The Anderson deal, while headline-grabbing, has yet to justify its price tag, and the pursuit of Fernández and Bouaddi risks repeating the same mistakes. Reijnders’ sale, though financially sound, is a symptom of a deeper issue: a squad that feels overhauled but undercooked.

As City navigate their first season without Guardiola, the Reijnders exit is a microcosm of their broader dilemma. The club’s financial power remains unmatched, but their ability to translate it into sustained success is now under scrutiny. The Saudi Pro League’s interest in Reijnders may be a short-term gain, but it also serves as a warning: City’s summer spending has left them vulnerable to the very forces they once sought to control.

For Maresca, the task is clear. He must rebuild a squad that feels both overcrowded and underprepared, all while operating in the long shadow of his predecessor. Reijnders’ departure is just the beginning.
