Salah to Trabzonspor: Why Liverpool’s exit door is wide open

Mohamed Salah’s move to Trabzonspor is not just another summer transfer—it is a rupture. The Egyptian forward, who spent nine years at Liverpool and scored 257 goals in 442 appearances, has chosen Turkey over a new contract at Anfield. Trabzonspor confirmed negotiations began on Tuesday, with the club chair stating Salah is expected in Istanbul for a medical on Wednesday and to finalise his signing by Thursday. This is not a stopgap: it is the end of an era, and the clearest sign yet that Liverpool’s summer rebuild has failed to secure the future they promised.

An exit unanswered by ambition

Liverpool’s failure to retain Salah is not just a personnel issue—it is a strategic one. The club entered the summer with a clear directive: rebuild around continuity while adding targeted quality. Yet as the window tightens, their targets have slipped away. Arsenal are closing in on Bruno Guimarães, Manchester United are prioritising Lewis Hall, and Tottenham continue to chase Victor Osimhen. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s reported interest in Bradley Barcola has not translated into action, leaving them exposed in attack. Former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher argued in a Sky Sports interview that the club’s priorities were misaligned, stating they needed to replace Salah with a proven Premier League performer rather than chase unproven potential—underscoring the disconnect between Liverpool’s stated aims and their execution.

Salah’s departure is the consequence. His final season at Liverpool saw a decline in form—seven goals and seven assists in 27 league matches—but his exit was sealed long before. The public rift with former manager Arne Slot, his exclusion from Champions League squads, and the club’s refusal to meet his expectations on contract length and role all signalled this moment. Trabzonspor, despite being Turkey’s fourth-biggest club, have offered a two-year deal and a platform Salah clearly values over uncertainty at Anfield.

Trabzonspor’s gamble on a global icon

For Trabzonspor, Salah is more than a signing—he is a statement. The Black Sea club, winners of seven Turkish Super Lig titles (including their most recent in 2022), have not traditionally competed for marquee names. But in Salah, they secure a player with global reach, Champions League pedigree, and a recent Premier League Player of the Season award. His 29-goal, 18-assist haul in the 2024-25 season—equalling the league record for goal involvements—proves his quality is undiminished, even at 34.

The club’s ambition is clear. Trabzonspor finished third in Turkey last season and will enter the Europa League playoffs, a platform Salah can elevate. Their chairman’s timeline—medical on Wednesday, contract by Thursday—reflects urgency, not hesitation. This is not a sentimental move; it is a calculated risk on a player who can deliver immediate returns. The alternative—chasing Besiktas, where talks stalled over financial and image-rights demands—would have been a distraction. Instead, Trabzonspor have secured their marquee signing without the noise.

The vacuum Liverpool cannot fill

Liverpool’s summer has been defined by missed opportunities. Their failure to act decisively on Salah’s future—despite his status as the club’s all-time top scorer—has left a void no incoming transfer can fill. The club’s transfer activity has been reactive: monitoring Barcola and scrambling to replace the goals and profile Salah provided. But recruitment is not just about replacing players; it is about defining a new identity. As Salah’s move to Turkey crystallises, the question for Liverpool is whether their next generation—Darwin Núñez, Luis Díaz, and the academy—can rise to the challenge.

The tactical implications are stark. Salah’s directness, his ability to stretch defences, and his penalty threat were constants in Liverpool’s attack. His absence will force a reshuffle: Núñez may need to play centrally more often, Díaz could be tasked with carrying the creative burden, and young forwards like Ben Doak or Harvey Elliott must step up. But talent alone does not guarantee cohesion. Liverpool’s pre-season has been disrupted by uncertainty, and their squad now lacks the clear hierarchy that defined their recent successes.

What comes next

Liverpool’s window is not yet closed, but their margin for error has vanished. The club must now prioritise defensive upgrades—particularly at centre-back—and identify a creative midfielder to replace the void left by Salah’s departure. Their pursuit of Barcola, if pursued with conviction, could mitigate some of the damage, but it is a gamble on potential rather than proven impact. Meanwhile, Trabzonspor’s gain is Liverpool’s loss: a free transfer that saves the Egyptian’s wages while adding a world-class profile to their squad.

Salah’s move to Trabzonspor is not just a transfer—it is a reset. For Liverpool, it is a reckoning. The club that once prided itself on loyalty and ambition now faces a summer of recalibration. The question is whether they can rebuild before the season begins, or whether this exit will be the first of many.
