Sávio’s Spurs move: why £85m winger is Spurs’ most important signing since Kane

Tottenham’s £85m capture of Sávio from Manchester City is the most expensive permanent signing in the Premier League era outside the Kane-to-Real Madrid deal, and the first move since Spurs last summer that truly feels like a statement of intent. The Brazilian winger arrives with a club-record fee for City, a £300m+ summer spending spree, and the immediate pressure of replacing Son Heung-min’s creative footprint. Whether Sávio can step into those boots remains the central question—one that will define whether this is a masterstroke or an overpriced punt on a player whose top-flight CV is still thin.

Why Spurs broke the bank for a player with 7 Premier League starts

Sávio’s Premier League résumé reads like a cautionary tale: two goals in 84 appearances for City, with just seven top-flight starts last season. Yet Spurs paid £75m upfront—rising to £85m with add-ons—because they believe his potential outweighs his recent minutes. The club’s sporting director Johan Lange framed it plainly: “He has already shown his quality at the highest level, and we believe his ability, style and mentality will be a great fit.” That “highest level” includes flashes in the Champions League and domestic cups, where his dribbling and crossing occasionally lit up games. The gamble hinges on whether Roberto De Zerbi can coax that same impact from a player who has spent two seasons as a rotational option at a club that prioritises system over individual brilliance.

City’s loss is Spurs’ gain, but their record sale underscores a shift in strategy. Julian Álvarez left for Atlético Madrid in 2024 for £82m; Sávio’s deal eclipses that, making him City’s most expensive outgoing transfer. The Blues have already earmarked Palmeiras’ Allan as a £37.5m replacement, while Spurs’ own spending has ballooned past £300m with the additions of Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, and Jan Paul van Hecke. The contrast is stark: City recoup and reinvest, while Spurs bet big on a player whose ceiling remains unproven in England’s most physical league.

De Zerbi’s vision: a creative outlet, not a direct Son clone

De Zerbi has spent 18 months trying to build a Spurs side in his image—one that attacks with fluidity and overloads wide areas. Sávio’s arrival is the clearest sign yet that he wants to accelerate that project. “He brings energy, imagination and quality in wide positions,” the manager said. “He has the courage to attack defenders and the ability to change a game with his creativity.” Those are the traits Spurs lacked after Son’s departure, not just in goals but in moments of individual brilliance. The question is whether Sávio’s style—more dribbler than pure finisher—fits the system’s demands. De Zerbi’s Spurs have thrived on collective movement, but Sávio’s best work often comes in one-on-one situations, where his close control and sudden changes of pace can unbalance a defence.

If Sávio is to justify the fee, he’ll need to replicate the impact of Omar Marmoush, the £65m winger Spurs are reportedly close to signing from City in a double raid. Together, the pair could form a dynamic partnership on either flank, with Sávio’s right-footedness complementing Marmoush’s left-sided threat. Yet even that scenario assumes both players adapt quickly to a league where physicality and tactical discipline often trump flair. The early returns will come in pre-season and the opening fixtures, where Spurs face a brutal run of fixtures including Chelsea and Liverpool. A slow start could expose the flaws in De Zerbi’s bold gamble.

Is this the move that finally silences Spurs’ transfer critics?

For years, Spurs’ transfer business has been criticised for overpaying for potential rather than proven Premier League performers. Sávio’s deal fits that pattern, but the context is different. This is not a £100m punt on a teenager; it’s a £85m bet on a 22-year-old who has already played Champions League football and scored in a Manchester derby. The difference between success and failure may come down to minutes. Sávio averaged just 18 league appearances per season at City, and his role was often peripheral. At Spurs, he’ll need to start more often than he did at the Etihad to justify the outlay.

De Zerbi’s ultimatum to his squad—”proud and happy” players must leave—suggests he’s not afraid to reshape the team around his vision. Sávio’s arrival could accelerate that process, with players like Manor Solomon or Pedro Porro facing increased competition. Yet the manager’s track record of developing young attackers is mixed. His time at Brighton saw Pascal Groß and Solly March flourish, but his Chelsea tenure ended in frustration. The early signs at Spurs have been promising, but the Premier League waits for no one. If Sávio struggles in the opening months, the scrutiny will be intense—and the club’s record spending spree will look like a gamble rather than a masterstroke.

For now, Spurs have their creative outlet. Whether it’s the right one remains to be seen.
