Scot Prem: Hearts demand ‘justice’ as Findlay red card to be appealed

Hearts have launched an immediate appeal against the red card shown to midfielder Ross Findlay in their Scottish Premiership defeat to Celtic, demanding “justice” for a decision they believe was unduly harsh. The club’s stance underscores the high stakes of Saturday’s 2-1 loss at Parkhead, where a controversial dismissal left them with ten men and a mountain to climb late in the game.

Red card ruling triggers swift appeal

The Scottish Football Association’s disciplinary panel will now examine footage of the incident after Hearts formally lodged their appeal within hours of the final whistle. Club officials described the straight red card for Findlay as “disproportionate,” arguing that the challenge lacked the malicious intent required for an immediate dismissal under the laws of the game. The appeal process could take several days, leaving the midfielder’s availability for future fixtures uncertain.

Findlay’s dismissal came in the 78th minute, with Hearts already 2-0 down and under intense pressure. The decision shifted the balance of the match, effectively ending their hopes of salvaging a point from a tightly contested derby. Hearts’ appeal will hinge on whether the tackle breached the threshold for a red card or whether it merited at least a yellow, which would have allowed Findlay to remain on the pitch.

Celtic capitalise on numerical advantage

Celtic extended their lead through a second-half strike from Kyogo Furuhashi before Hearts were reduced to ten men, compounding their defensive struggles. The Hoops’ ability to exploit the extra space created by Findlay’s absence highlighted the tactical consequences of the red card. With Hearts already under pressure from a relentless Celtic attack, the dismissal turned a difficult afternoon into an uphill battle.

The result leaves Hearts in a precarious position in the Premiership, with their next fixtures against Aberdeen and Rangers looming large. A points haul from those matches will be critical if they are to keep pace with the chasing pack and avoid slipping further behind the Old Firm duo.

Tactical shift leaves Hearts vulnerable

With Findlay sent off, Hearts were forced into a reactive shape, prioritising defensive solidity over their usual possession-based approach. The midfield, already stretched, struggled to regain control, while Celtic’s width and direct running exposed gaps in transition. The tactical shift came too late to influence the outcome, but it exposed the fragility of a Hearts side already unsettled by a series of inconsistent performances this season.

Hearts’ appeal represents more than just a single disciplinary decision—it is a fight for competitive fairness. If upheld, the red card will stand, and Findlay will serve a suspension, further depleting a squad already thin on midfield options. If overturned, the club will regain a key player at a pivotal moment in the season. Either way, the appeal underscores the high stakes of every decision in a league where margins are razor-thin.
