Sunderland latest: Bid submitted for Marseille winger

Sunderland have taken a decisive step toward reshaping their squad for the Championship run-in, submitting a formal bid for Marseille winger Amine Harit. The move underscores the Black Cats’ ambition to strengthen their squad depth and highlights the club’s willingness to invest in proven talent with European experience. Marseille’s asking price remains a hurdle, but the club’s willingness to engage suggests Harit’s profile aligns with Lee Clark’s system.

A calculated bid for a player with pedigree

The bid for Harit, who has featured in Ligue 1 and the Europa League, reflects Sunderland’s strategy of targeting wingers capable of stretching defences and contributing to both goals and assists. Marseille’s asking price remains a hurdle, but the club’s willingness to engage suggests Harit’s profile aligns with Lee Clark’s system. The bid follows Sunderland’s recent activity in the transfer window, including the agreed £8m deal for Wrexham goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, reinforcing their focus on bolstering both defensive and attacking options.

Harit’s versatility—operating on either flank or as an attacking midfielder—adds tactical flexibility, a trait Sunderland have prioritised since the January window opened. His experience in high-pressure European fixtures could prove invaluable as the Black Cats push for promotion via the playoffs or automatic spots. The bid’s submission signals urgency, but negotiations are likely to be protracted given Marseille’s reluctance to part with key players without a compelling offer.

Why this move matters now

Sunderland’s transfer activity this month has been concentrated on addressing weaknesses exposed in recent defeats. The club’s defensive frailties, particularly in wide areas, have been a recurring issue, and Harit’s arrival could mitigate that by providing additional cover in midfield while stretching opposition full-backs. His ability to deliver crosses and cut inside onto his stronger foot offers a direct route to goal, a quality Sunderland have lacked since the departure of Ross Stewart.

The bid also arrives amid broader squad uncertainty, with reports suggesting three players are set to leave in the coming weeks. The potential exits of midfielders or wingers could create space for Harit to integrate immediately, reducing the need for a prolonged adaptation period. Clark’s side have struggled to maintain consistency in the league, and a marquee signing of Harit’s calibre could provide the catalyst for a late-season surge.

What happens next?

Marseille’s response will dictate Sunderland’s next steps. If the bid is rejected, the Black Cats may need to explore alternative options, though their financial constraints limit the scope for a bidding war. Harit’s contract runs until 2025, which complicates matters, but Marseille’s recent financial fair play concerns may force their hand. A counter-offer or a structured payment plan could be on the table, with Sunderland prepared to meet some of the demands to secure the deal.

The timing of the bid—amid a congested fixture schedule—suggests Sunderland are prioritising long-term stability over short-term fixes. Harit’s potential arrival would not only strengthen the first team but also send a signal to rivals about the club’s intent. Whether this translates to on-field success remains to be seen, but the Harit pursuit underscores Sunderland’s determination to compete at the highest level of the Championship.

For now, all eyes are on Marseille’s response. If the bid is accepted, Sunderland could finalise the deal before the window closes, providing a much-needed boost ahead of their next set of fixtures. If not, the Black Cats will need to reassess their options—and quickly.
