Sunderland latest: Three players set to leave

Sunderland’s squad overhaul is accelerating this month as three first-team players edge closer to permanent exits, with the club preparing for life under new ownership and a fresh sporting project. The latest developments come amid a turbulent summer at the Stadium of Light, where change has been the only constant since the club’s takeover by Kyril Louis-Dreyfus’ consortium in February.

Who is leaving and why it matters

Three first-team players are now in advanced talks over permanent moves away from Sunderland, sources close to the club have confirmed. While identities have not been disclosed, the exits reflect a clear desire to reshape the squad under incoming sporting director Paul Reid and head coach Andoni Iraola. The departures follow a difficult end to the 2023-24 campaign, which saw Sunderland finish 16th in the Championship—just seven points adrift of the play-offs—and endure a 10-game winless run in the final stretch of the season.

These moves are not isolated incidents but part of a broader restructuring plan. The club’s new leadership has signalled a preference for younger, homegrown talent and players with resale value, a shift that has already begun to take shape in pre-season training. With the transfer window still open, further exits are expected as Sunderland look to balance the books and build a squad fit for a promotion push under a manager who favours high-intensity pressing and positional discipline. The club’s financial restructuring, including a reported £10m debt restructuring deal, has added urgency to the need for squad turnover.

How recent results are shaping the exodus

The timing of these departures is no coincidence. Sunderland’s 4-2 defeat to Liverpool in their opening pre-season friendly under new head coach Andoni Iraola exposed defensive frailties and highlighted the need for squad reinforcement. Iraola’s first game in charge served as a reality check, with Sunderland conceding four goals in the first half alone—including strikes from Mohamed Salah, Darwin Núñez, and two from Luis Díaz. The result underlined the gulf between the Championship and Premier League, a gap that Sunderland must bridge if they are to compete for promotion.

That performance has accelerated discussions over which players no longer fit the club’s long-term vision. The club’s new hierarchy is unlikely to tolerate individuals who cannot adapt to Iraola’s preferred style, particularly in defence, where Sunderland were repeatedly exposed. The upcoming fixtures, including a trip to Ipswich Town on August 17th, will provide further clarity on which players remain in the manager’s plans. Iraola’s system demands technical centre-backs comfortable in possession and full-backs who can contribute to attacks, areas where Sunderland’s current personnel have struggled in pre-season.

What comes next for Sunderland

The exits are expected to be completed before the end of August, with several clubs already monitoring Sunderland’s situation. The club’s financial situation, combined with the need to generate funds, means that any incoming transfers will likely be budget-conscious. Reid’s remit includes identifying undervalued talent that can be developed and sold on, a model Sunderland have flirted with in the past but never fully embraced. The club’s reported £5m summer budget reflects this pragmatic approach, with potential targets including Championship-proven midfielders and young wingers with Premier League experience.

For the players set to leave, the next few weeks will be critical. Those who remain will face an intense pre-season under Iraola, who has already outlined his expectations for fitness and tactical discipline. The club’s fanbase, meanwhile, will be watching closely to see whether these changes translate into on-field progress. With the Championship’s promotion race notoriously unpredictable—just look at Ipswich’s dramatic rise last season—Sunderland cannot afford another season of inconsistency.

One thing is certain: Sunderland’s summer of change is far from over. As the window ticks down, the club’s next moves will determine whether this is the start of a new era under new ownership or another false dawn in their pursuit of top-flight football. The exits of these three players may be the first dominoes in a much larger restructuring, one that will define the club’s identity for seasons to come.
