This is Gianni Infantino’s Icarus moment

Gianni Infantino’s gamble on privatising the World Cup has crashed into the hard reality of football’s governing bodies. Within 48 hours, the FIFA president’s plan to sell off a stake in the tournament has been condemned by UEFA, Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation, while his own senior adviser resigned in protest. The episode reads like a Greek tragedy: a leader who flew too close to the sun now watches his wings melt. The question is no longer whether the scheme will collapse, but how much collateral damage it leaves behind.

How the plan unravelled in days

Infantino’s proposal to sell a stake in the World Cup was unveiled only days ago, yet it has already been repudiated across the football world. UEFA, the European governing body, has threatened to boycott FIFA competitions unless the plan is permanently abandoned. Concacaf, the North and Central American federation, has issued an identical rejection, while the Asian Football Confederation has publicly condemned the move in a statement that described the proposal as “detrimental to the integrity of the tournament.” The opposition is not confined to regional bodies: Infantino’s own senior adviser, Carlos Cordeiro, resigned in protest, signalling fractures inside FIFA’s own leadership. Bernd Neuendorf, president of the German Football Association and a FIFA Council member, admitted he first learned of the plan from media reports, calling the lack of prior consultation “very surprising and also annoying.” The absence of internal disclosure underscores the opacity that has long dogged Infantino’s tenure, with Neuendorf adding that such a “far-reaching project” should have been discussed “within FIFA for months; a year, or even longer.”

Why Infantino’s authority now hangs by a thread

The backlash has reached the political sphere. The UK Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, publicly declared that Infantino is the “wrong man” to lead FIFA, a rare intervention that amplifies the reputational damage. FIFA insists it will press ahead with a vote, yet the breadth of opposition makes success improbable in its current form. The episode reveals the limits of Infantino’s accumulated power: even after years of pushing the boundaries of his authority, he has misjudged the moment when football’s stakeholders will no longer tolerate unilateral decisions. The World Cup, football’s most lucrative asset, has become the flashpoint for a wider dissatisfaction with FIFA’s governance culture, with critics arguing that the stake sale would further commercialise the tournament at the expense of its global appeal.

FIFA’s own statutes may now come under scrutiny. Article 7 of FIFA’s Statutes states that decisions of “fundamental importance” must be discussed by the FIFA Council before implementation, a clause that appears to have been bypassed in this case. The German Football Association has already indicated it will raise the issue at the next FIFA Council meeting, while the French Football Federation has called for an emergency session to address the “lack of transparency.” These procedural concerns have compounded the political pressure, with Burnham’s intervention marking the first time a sitting head of government has publicly questioned FIFA’s leadership in such stark terms.

The fallout and what comes next

If the plan collapses, Infantino’s presidency will enter a new phase of vulnerability. The resignations, public condemnations and threatened boycotts have exposed a coalition of opposition that FIFA cannot easily ignore. Yet the organisation’s leadership has given no indication of retreat, raising the prospect of a protracted institutional standoff. The coming weeks will determine whether Infantino can regain control through negotiation or whether his authority will continue to erode. One thing is certain: the episode has already reshaped the dynamics of power within FIFA, leaving the president weaker and his critics emboldened.

Infantino’s Icarus moment was not marked by a single misstep, but by a cascade of institutional rejection. The World Cup stake sale, once framed as a bold financial move, has instead become a symbol of unchecked ambition. The lesson is clear: even the most entrenched leader cannot defy the collective will of football’s governing bodies without consequence. The episode has exposed the fragility of Infantino’s authority, built over years of incremental power accumulation, and demonstrated that football’s stakeholders will draw a line when their interests are perceived to be at risk.
