Thomas Tuchel open about England’s ‘formula’ to beat Argentina – ‘It’s pretty simple’

Thomas Tuchel has laid bare England’s path to a first World Cup final since 1966: keep feeding Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham until the job is done. The Bayern Munich striker and Real Madrid midfielder have become the nation’s decisive duo, and Tuchel is happy to let their individual brilliance carry the team forward.

Two players, one blueprint

After England’s 2-1 win over Norway that secured a semi-final berth, Tuchel spelled out the “formula” in blunt terms. “If we are talking about a formula, it’s pretty simple: Put Harry and Jude together, they will do the rest,” he said. The manager acknowledged room for improvement in involving more players, but he made clear the pair’s impact is beyond reproach.

Between them, Kane and Bellingham have scored all but one of England’s goals in the tournament. Marcus Rashford provided the exception, yet the weight of goals has fallen on the shoulders of the two elite performers. Tuchel praised their efficiency through the middle of the pitch, their knack for decisive moments, and their willingness to shoulder responsibility.

Why Argentina must fear the Kane-Bellingham axis

Argentina now stand between England and a place in the final, and Tuchel’s confidence in his talismans is unmistakable. Kane remains in contention for the Golden Boot, level with Bellingham on six goals each, while Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi lead with eight. The English pair will need further fireworks to overhaul their rivals, but Tuchel insists their partnership is already delivering at the right time.

Kane, speaking after the Norway win, highlighted Bellingham’s two goals as the difference-makers. “The difference again was Jude with the two goals at the perfect time,” he said. “That is what got us over the line.” Tuchel, though critical of England’s overall performance, conceded the result mattered more than style.

A tactical edge or a necessary gamble?

Tuchel’s approach is pragmatic rather than revolutionary. By relying on Kane and Bellingham, he reduces the variables in high-pressure matches. Their chemistry through midfield allows England to bypass complex build-up phases and attack directly, a strategy that has yielded results. Yet the manager’s admission that “we need to get better in attacking, to also bring other players into position” hints at a potential ceiling.

If Argentina can neutralise the Kane-Bellingham axis, England’s route to glory narrows sharply. Conversely, if the pair continue to click, the Three Lions may yet rewrite history. Tuchel’s faith in their ability to “decide the matches” is absolute, and that confidence could prove decisive.

England’s World Cup campaign now hinges on whether their two star performers can replicate their club-level brilliance on the biggest stage. Tuchel’s blueprint is simple, but its execution against a team of Argentina’s pedigree will demand everything Kane and Bellingham have left to give.
