Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 Charlton Athletic: Savio scores and assists on debut as Spurs ease into Carabao Cup third round – Sky Sports

Tottenham Hotspur’s Carabao Cup campaign began with a statement of intent, not from a seasoned first-teamer, but from a £85 million signing who had barely unpacked. Savio’s debut lasted just 20 minutes, yet it was enough to light up the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and silence any doubts about his readiness for English football. The Brazilian winger, introduced in the 70th minute, scored within minutes and set up another as Spurs dismantled Charlton Athletic 5-1 to progress to the third round.

A debut to remember

Savio arrived at Spurs on Tuesday and by Wednesday night he had already endeared himself to the home crowd. His cameo was electric: a left-footed strike from the edge of the box, followed by a pinpoint cross for Manor Solomon’s goal. Jamie Redknapp, watching in the studio, could barely contain his enthusiasm. “He lit the place up,” the former Spurs midfielder said. “This is what Tottenham want. Players like that who can get you off your seat.”

The performance was a stark contrast to Spurs’ recent struggles in front of goal. Last season, the club managed just 48 league goals, and Savio’s arrival offered a tangible upgrade in creativity and end product. His ability to cut inside and fire a ferocious left-footed shot—seen in his opening goal—provided the kind of flair that has been missing in recent months.

De Zerbi’s challenge

Roberto De Zerbi, however, refused to let the moment overshadow the work still to be done. The Spurs manager, who has publicly outlined his expectations for wingers to contribute double-digit goals, challenged Savio to raise his game further. “Yes, it is a perfect day for him,” De Zerbi said post-match. “But his biggest step is to increase the number of goals. The best wingers score many goals.”

De Zerbi’s target for Savio—10 or 12 goals—reflects the urgency in his squad. Last season, Spurs’ lack of goals cost them dearly in their title push, and the manager is determined not to repeat the same mistakes. Savio’s technical quality is not in question, but his conversion rate must improve if he is to justify his price tag and become a regular starter.

Tactical reset

Spurs’ Carabao Cup victory came just days after their heavy defeat to Brentford, a result that exposed frailties in their defensive structure. Against Charlton, De Zerbi made nine changes, a clear signal that the competition is being treated as a reset rather than an afterthought. The changes paid off, with Spurs dominating possession and creating chances at will.

The introduction of Savio was the most eye-catching tactical decision, but the structural improvements were just as important. Spurs’ midfield controlled the tempo, while their full-backs provided width and defensive cover. The contrast with the Brentford defeat was stark—this was a team with a clear plan, not a collection of individuals.

What comes next

Spurs’ next challenge is a trip to Anfield for a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Liverpool, a tie that could test their progress more rigorously. Andy Robertson, set to return from injury for Liverpool, will provide a stern test for Savio’s defensive awareness. Meanwhile, Chelsea could host Leeds, and Coventry will face Aston Villa in other third-round ties.

For Savio, the real test begins now. A debut goal and assist are a promising start, but the Premier League’s physicality and intensity will demand more. If he can replicate his cameo form over 90 minutes, Spurs may have found their missing piece.
