Tottenham v Newcastle LIVE: Anthony Elanga scores again to break deadlock in Premier League clash

Tottenham and Newcastle entered Saturday’s Premier League clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with contrasting momentum. Spurs, fresh off a 3-0 opening-day defeat at Brentford, had signed Savio and Omar Marmoush in a double deal from Manchester City, while Newcastle, unbeaten under Matthias Jaissle, brought in Nico Gonzalez as a replacement for Sandro Tonali—who now faced his former club following his £100m move to north London.

First half: Spurs start brightly but waste early chances

Tottenham began the game on the front foot, with Mathys Tel squandering a gilt-edged opportunity in the 67th minute when his free-kick ballooned into Row Z. The miss capped a disjointed spell in which Spurs struggled to carve out clear openings, despite dominating possession. Newcastle, meanwhile, absorbed pressure before breaking with purpose, and their composure paid off just before the hour mark.

Anthony Elanga, introduced as a substitute in the second half, broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute. A diagonal pass from deep by Nico Gonzalez found Elanga, who turned Tonali with ease before rolling a low shot into the far post. The goal marked Elanga’s second league strike in as many games—a stark contrast to his tally of zero top-flight goals last season. Newcastle doubled their lead in the 73rd minute when Yoane Wissa converted an acrobatic finish, capping a frustrating evening for Spurs.

Tonali’s reunion with Newcastle ends in disappointment

The return of Sandro Tonali to St James’ Park was always going to be charged with emotion, but his afternoon ended in frustration. The midfielder, who joined Tottenham for £100m in the summer, was penalised for catching Elanga with his arm in the 52nd minute—though he escaped a booking. The incident underscored Newcastle’s ruthlessness in front of goal, a trait that has already seen them secure late winners under Jaissle.

The visitors’ substitutions in the 72nd minute—Nico Gonzalez off for Sean Steur and Joe Willock replaced by Nick Woltemade—signaled a shift in personnel rather than tactics. Tottenham, meanwhile, reacted with changes of their own, introducing Mohammed Kudus, Mikey Moore, and Destiny Udogie in quick succession. Kudus’ introduction hinted at a more aggressive approach, but Newcastle’s lead held firm.

What the result means for both sides

For Newcastle, the win extended their unbeaten start to the season and reinforced their status as early pace-setters under Jaissle. The Magpies’ attacking trio of Wissa, Elanga, and Bruno Guimarães have already shown a new lease of life, with Elanga’s brace against Spurs following his goal against Liverpool last weekend. The club’s recruitment, including the addition of Gonzalez, appears to be paying dividends.

Tottenham, meanwhile, endured a second consecutive setback, leaving them with a mountain to climb in the title race. Their struggles to convert possession into clear chances—highlighted by Tel’s miss and a series of wayward efforts—will raise questions about their attacking cohesion. The double signing of Savio and Marmoush, who impressed in midweek with a goal and an assist in the Carabao Cup, offers a glimmer of hope, but results on the pitch remain the priority.

The defeat leaves Spurs with a familiar challenge: turning individual promise into collective consistency. With Liverpool and Arsenal among their next opponents, the pressure is mounting. Newcastle, by contrast, will look to build on this performance and establish themselves as genuine title contenders.

As the dust settles on a bruising afternoon for Spurs, one thing is clear: Newcastle’s attacking renaissance under Jaissle is real, and Tonali’s reunion with his former club did little to soften the blow.
