Transfer news LIVE: Alvarez to miss Atletico game before Arsenal deadline, Chelsea make Enzo decision, Barcola’s Liverpool medical

Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola is entering its decisive phase, with the Reds having agreed a £100m fee—plus £20m in add-ons—with Paris Saint-Germain. The 23-year-old winger is set to complete a medical at Anfield, a move that would mark the latest in a summer of high-profile arrivals under Arne Slot. Meanwhile, Arsenal’s late push for Julián Álvarez has intensified, with Atlético Madrid confirming the forward will miss Saturday’s game against Sevilla amid ongoing transfer talks. Over at Chelsea, Enzo Fernández’s future hangs in the balance as Manchester City inch closer to a £120m deal, though Xabi Alonso insists the club will only sanction a move if it strengthens their options.

Barcola’s medical signals Liverpool’s latest marquee signing

Liverpool’s transfer business has taken a decisive turn with the outline agreement for Barcola, a player the club have prioritised for weeks. The fee, structured as £100m upfront with £20m in add-ons, underscores the club’s willingness to meet PSG’s valuation after a protracted negotiation. Sources indicate the French side lowered their demands to facilitate a swift conclusion, with Barcola’s medical now the final procedural step before personal terms are finalised. The Reds, already bolstered by recent signings, are not stopping there—reports suggest they remain in the market for another winger, with Ismaila Sarr of Crystal Palace a target after Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh was ruled out. Andoni Iraola, however, has refused to guarantee Cody Gakpo’s future, with interest from Tottenham and Manchester City complicating Liverpool’s plans.

Arsenal’s Álvarez gamble hinges on Atlético’s resolve

Arsenal’s pursuit of Álvarez has reached a critical juncture, with Atlético Madrid CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín declaring the forward will “never, ever” join Barcelona but leaving the door ajar for a move elsewhere. The Gunners, who have monitored the situation closely, are weighing a late bid before Friday’s deadline, though Atlético’s stance remains firm. Álvarez, who has missed three consecutive training sessions, is reportedly in “poor health” due to the stress of the saga, adding a human dimension to a transfer that has dragged on for weeks. The timing is fraught: Atlético’s next fixture against Sevilla comes just days before the window slams shut, limiting their flexibility to accommodate a sale.

Chelsea’s Enzo dilemma exposes their transfer market naivety

Chelsea’s attempt to offload Fernández before Tuesday’s deadline has exposed the club’s misjudged valuation strategy. The Blues initially set a £120m asking price in May, only to see that figure become outdated as Premier League and European deals eclipsed £100m—most recently Liverpool’s agreement for Barcola. Xabi Alonso, left without Fernández for Thursday’s Carabao Cup win over Luton, admitted the midfielder was omitted due to a lack of “desire to play,” a rare public admission of squad disharmony. Chelsea are open to selling but only if they can recoup funds to strengthen elsewhere, a gamble that risks leaving them exposed in midfield. Manchester City’s reported £120m offer suggests a resolution is near, though Alonso’s insistence on “players that feel energy to play” hints at deeper unrest within the squad.

Amid the chaos, Arsenal’s Champions League draw this week—where they face a yet-to-be-confirmed opponent—adds another layer of pressure to Mikel Arteta’s squad-building efforts. The Independent’s live coverage of the draw underscores how quickly priorities shift in elite football, where transfer sagas and fixture congestion collide. Chelsea, meanwhile, must navigate a delicate balance: sell Fernández at a premium or risk being priced out of the market entirely. For Liverpool, Barcola’s arrival would cap a summer of ambition, but their hunt for another winger reveals the fragility of even the most meticulous plans.

The next 72 hours will define these clubs’ trajectories. Arsenal’s late push for Álvarez could reshape their attack, while Chelsea’s potential loss of Fernández may force Alonso to overhaul his midfield before the international break. Liverpool, meanwhile, stand on the brink of adding Barcola—proof that even in a market defined by caution, bold moves still carry the highest stakes.
