Transfer news LIVE: Arsenal announce deal; Barcola undergoes medical – London Evening Standard

Arsenal’s transfer activity has entered a decisive phase, with two significant developments dominating the weekend’s headlines. The Gunners have moved aggressively to bolster their squad, while a high-profile Ligue 1 winger is on the verge of a blockbuster move to England. The timing is critical, with the Premier League transfer window scheduled to close at 11pm BST on Monday, August 31, and the club’s hierarchy appears determined to secure reinforcements before the deadline.

Arsenal complete academy raid on Manchester United

Arsenal have turned the tables on Manchester United, completing a transfer raid of their own by signing James Scanlon from United’s academy. The move marks a rare success for the Gunners in the ongoing battle for young talent with their rivals, and it underscores Mikel Arteta’s side are not content to watch United poach their academy products without response. Scanlon’s departure from Old Trafford will be felt, particularly given United’s recent history of targeting Arsenal’s youth ranks. The details of the deal remain undisclosed, but the capture of a promising academy graduate underscores Arsenal’s long-term planning amid a summer of high-stakes transfers.

Barcola’s Liverpool transfer inches closer

The transfer saga surrounding Bradley Barcola is nearing its conclusion, with Liverpool reportedly finalising a £123 million deal for the Paris Saint-Germain winger. The structure of the agreement includes a guaranteed £106 million upfront, with an additional £17 million in potential add-ons. Barcola, 23, has been a consistent source of goals and creativity for PSG, and his arrival at Anfield would provide Andoni Iraola with a dynamic attacking option. Liverpool’s pursuit of Barcola has been one of the most closely watched sagas of the summer, and if completed, it would represent a significant statement of intent from the Reds in the final days of the window.

Arsenal’s Julian Alvarez pursuit intensifies

Arsenal’s interest in Julian Alvarez has reached a critical phase, with the club preparing to table a £130 million bid for the Atletico Madrid striker. Alvarez’s future has been uncertain in recent weeks, with reports suggesting he has missed training sessions due to illness. The Gunners’ willingness to meet Atletico’s valuation underscores their desperation to add a proven Premier League striker to their ranks. The move would address a long-standing need in Arteta’s squad and provide competition for Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus. However, Atletico’s reluctance to sell could yet scupper the deal, leaving Arsenal with a narrow window to secure his signature.

Arsenal’s transfer activity this weekend reflects a club operating under pressure, with the need to strengthen their squad before the window slams shut. The capture of Scanlon is a shrewd piece of business, while the pursuit of Alvarez and the potential loss of Barcola to Liverpool highlight the volatility of the market. Arteta’s side must navigate these challenges carefully, balancing ambition with pragmatism. The coming days will determine whether Arsenal can secure the reinforcements they need or risk falling short in their title ambitions.

Elsewhere, Napoli’s interest in Newcastle’s Nick Woltemade adds another layer to the loan market, while Sunderland’s pursuit of Jack Grealish on loan from Manchester City suggests that even established Premier League players are not immune to speculative approaches. Arsenal’s focus, however, remains squarely on their own squad-building, with the next 72 hours likely to define their summer.

For Arsenal, the stakes could not be higher. The club’s ability to secure Alvarez or another marquee signing will shape their season, while the loss of Barcola to Liverpool would be a significant blow. Arteta’s side must act decisively, as the window’s closure looms large. The coming days will reveal whether Arsenal can turn their ambitions into reality or face another summer of unfulfilled potential.
