Transfer news LIVE: Arsenal book Guimaraes medical, Vinicius done deal – London Evening Standard

Arsenal’s transfer sprint gathers pace as Guimarães edges closer

Arsenal have accelerated their summer overhaul with two headline moves edging toward completion. Bruno Guimarães is set to finalise his switch from Newcastle United after the Gunners booked his medical, while multiple reports describe Vinícius Júnior’s transfer as imminent despite Real Madrid’s reluctance to entertain offers. The developments mark a decisive shift in Mikel Arteta’s squad-building strategy, with the club prepared to sanction a £75m outlay for the Brazilian midfielder and pursue one of Europe’s most coveted wingers. These signings would address long-standing needs in midfield control and attacking width, but the club’s pre-season stumbles suggest the new recruits will face immediate pressure to justify their price tags.

Guimarães’ arrival would cap a dramatic 12 months for Newcastle

Newcastle’s decision to release their captain reflects a broader acceptance that the club cannot retain every star amid financial fair play constraints. The Magpies’ hierarchy, once reluctant to entertain offers, have now sanctioned a move that will net them a seven-figure fee and a potential sell-on clause. Guimarães’ arrival at the Emirates would reunite him with Arteta, who has long coveted the 25-year-old’s ball-carrying and progressive passing. The Gunners’ pursuit of the Brazilian has intensified in recent weeks, with reports indicating the club have already structured a four-year contract to smooth his integration. Should the deal conclude, it would represent Arsenal’s most significant midfield investment since Declan Rice’s arrival in July 2023.

The timing of Guimarães’ potential move is notable. Newcastle’s pre-season has been disrupted by uncertainty over their own squad, while Arsenal’s opening friendly in Dublin exposed frailties that a midfield enforcer could help address. Arteta’s side laboured against Real Betis, conceding three times in a performance that underlined their lack of defensive solidity and midfield bite. Kepa Arrizabalaga’s error in the ninth minute allowed Rodrigo Riquelme to open the scoring, while Nelson Deossa’s long-range strike compounded Arsenal’s struggles. Piero Hincapié’s header from a Christos Tzolis corner offered a late consolation, but the gulf between expectation and execution was plain to see.

Vinícius Júnior’s transfer edges closer as Arsenal plot a summer overhaul

Arsenal’s pursuit of Vinícius Júnior has taken a decisive turn, with insiders describing the deal as imminent despite Real Madrid’s reluctance to entertain offers. The 23-year-old’s potential arrival would inject elite pace and directness into Arteta’s attack, complementing the creativity of Martin Ødegaard and the industry of Rice. The Gunners’ willingness to meet Real’s valuation—reported to be in excess of £100m—signals their intent to challenge for the Premier League title on multiple fronts. Liverpool’s reported interest in PSG pair Bradley Barcola and Ibrahima Mbaye adds further urgency to Arsenal’s window, as Arteta seeks to balance ambition with squad depth.

The club’s activity contrasts with their sluggish start to pre-season. Arsenal’s 3-1 defeat to Real Betis in Dublin exposed technical and tactical shortcomings that new signings will be expected to resolve. Arteta’s second-half changes—including the introductions of Gabriel and Gabriel Martinelli—offered fleeting signs of improvement, but the damage was done. The result, Arsenal’s first defeat of pre-season, served as a reminder that squad overhaul is no substitute for cohesion. The club’s transfer business, however, suggests they are betting on individual quality to bridge the gap.

What comes next: integration, expectations, and the Arteta test

Guimarães’ medical and Vinícius’ impending arrival would cap a remarkable 72 hours for Arsenal, but the real work begins once the paperwork is signed. The Brazilian midfielder’s integration will be closely scrutinised, particularly given his physical profile and the demands of Premier League midfields. Vinícius, meanwhile, would arrive with the weight of expectation to replicate his club form at international level—a challenge that has undone many before him. Arteta’s ability to mould these talents into a cohesive unit will determine whether Arsenal’s summer spending translates into tangible progress.

The club’s pre-season struggles also raise questions about their readiness for the Premier League opener. Christos Tzolis’ introduction against Betis offered a glimpse of the creativity Arteta craves, but the Gunners’ defensive lapses were too frequent to ignore. With Rice, Ødegaard, and key defenders still absent, the coming weeks will be critical in shaping a functional unit. The club’s transfer activity suggests they are prepared to back Arteta’s vision, but the early evidence indicates that squad harmony remains a work in progress.

As the window tightens, Arsenal’s focus must shift from headlines to harmony. Guimarães and Vinícius could transform the club’s fortunes, but only if they arrive to a structure capable of harnessing their talents. Arteta’s challenge is clear: turn potential into performance before the Premier League’s curtain rises.
