Transfer news LIVE: Arsenal’s Guimaraes bid rejected, Vinicius Jr deal close, Man Utd target left-back – The Independent

Arsenal’s efforts to sign Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle have suffered a setback after a bid from an unnamed club was rejected by the Premier League side, while Manchester United are targeting a left-back solution as the transfer window enters its final days. The flurry of activity comes as multiple high-profile deals remain in flux, with clubs under pressure to finalise moves before the deadline.

Arsenal’s Guimarães gamble stalls

Arsenal’s attempt to prise Bruno Guimarães away from Newcastle has been rebuffed, with the Premier League club unwilling to lower their valuation. The Gunners, who have been linked with the Brazilian midfielder for weeks, now face a choice: increase their offer or pivot to alternative targets. Guimarães, a key figure in Newcastle’s resurgence under Eddie Howe, remains a priority for Mikel Arteta, but the Magpies’ stance suggests they are in no hurry to sell. The rejection comes amid wider uncertainty over Arsenal’s midfield options, with Declan Rice already installed as the long-term anchor and Jorginho’s future unclear.

United’s left-back hunt edges forward

Manchester United are targeting Lewis Hall, the Chelsea loanee who has impressed during his temporary spell at Old Trafford. Hall, who joined United on loan in January, has rejected an approach to return to Chelsea, according to reports. The left-back’s preference for a permanent move to United strengthens their case, though the club will need to finalise financial terms before the window slams shut. Erik ten Hag’s side have prioritised defensive reinforcements, with Raphael Varane’s injury record and Tyrell Malacia’s inconsistency leaving gaps in the backline. Hall’s potential arrival would add depth and competition, though United’s defensive frailties extend beyond the left flank.

Vinícius Júnior’s potential Arsenal move nears completion

Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior is closing in on a move to Arsenal, with sources indicating a deal is nearing completion. The Brazilian winger, who has been a consistent goal threat in La Liga, would represent a significant coup for the Gunners if finalised. His arrival would add pace and directness to Arsenal’s attack, complementing the creativity of players like Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard. The potential signing comes as Arsenal chase a top-four finish, with their Champions League qualification hopes still finely balanced. Vinícius’s move would also underscore Arsenal’s willingness to gamble on high-risk, high-reward transfers in pursuit of silverware.

Arsenal’s transfer activity has been defined by bold strokes and setbacks this summer. Their pursuit of Guimarães reflects a midfield overhaul, with Arteta seeking to balance Rice’s physicality with more technical options. Yet the rejection from Newcastle underscores the challenges of breaking into a top-six side’s squad without a world-record bid. Meanwhile, the potential capture of Vinícius Júnior would signal a shift toward flair and unpredictability, a departure from the pragmatic signings of recent years.

For Manchester United, the focus has been on shoring up defensive weaknesses. Hall’s potential arrival, if confirmed, would be a rare bright spot in a transfer window marked by underwhelming additions. Ten Hag’s side remain in flux, with questions over their long-term project still unanswered. The left-back position, a recurring issue since Patrice Evra’s departure, could finally be addressed—but the window is running out.

As the deadline looms, both clubs face pivotal decisions. Arsenal’s midfield ambitions hinge on whether they can outbid Newcastle or pivot to Plan B, while United’s defensive overhaul risks falling short without a swift resolution. The coming days will determine whether these high-stakes gambles pay off—or leave both clubs exposed.
