Transfer news LIVE: Arsenal to confirm move, eight deals confirmed overnight and two collapse

The Premier League’s summer transfer window closed at 11pm on Tuesday with a record £3.2bn splurge, but the chaos did not end there. Eight deals were confirmed overnight, two collapsed in dramatic fashion, and nine clubs now face a fresh deadline just 48 hours later—this time to register squads for European competition. Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool are among those who must submit their Champions League and Europa League lists by 11pm on Wednesday, with UEFA’s squad rules adding another layer of complexity to an already frenetic window.

Arsenal’s gamble on depth over star power

Arsenal entered deadline day with a clear ambition: secure a marquee attacking signing to bolster their title defence. Instead, they added midfield depth and defensive cover. Bruno Guimarães arrived for £75m, Ezri Konsa for £51m, and Piero Hincapié for £45m, while Christos Tzolis arrived for £34m. But the Gunners also sold Gabriel Martinelli (£55.7m), Leandro Trossard (£15.3m) and Gabriel Jesus (£8.6m), leaving questions over their left-sided options. Arteta’s pursuit of Julian Álvarez stalled after Atlético Madrid refused to negotiate with Barcelona, while Vinícius Júnior remained at Real Madrid. The result? A squad reshaped for pragmatism rather than headline-grabbing flair.

Arsenal’s net spend of around £200m was dwarfed by rivals like Manchester City (£435m) and Chelsea (£349.8m), but the Gunners’ focus on defensive and midfield reinforcement reflects Mikel Arteta’s preference for tactical flexibility. The departures of Martinelli, Trossard and Jesus—who combined for 40 goals last season—also raise questions about the club’s attacking balance. With only Tzolis arriving as a direct replacement for those sold, Arteta’s side may need to rely on internal progression from players like Fabio Vieira or Emile Smith Rowe to fill the void.

Manchester United’s exodus and Everton’s late interest

United’s window was defined by exits, not arrivals. Seven players joined, but 24 left, including Anthony Martial, who is now the subject of interest from Everton. The Red Devils’ net spend was minimal, with no marquee signings to offset the departures of Martial, Axel Tuanzebe and others. While the club avoided a repeat of last summer’s chaotic deadline, the lack of incoming talent raises questions about Erik ten Hag’s long-term project. The squad’s composition now hinges on the fitness of existing players rather than new recruits.

United’s transfer activity was concentrated in the loan market, with no permanent signings of note. The club’s failure to address defensive frailties—despite selling Harry Maguire for £55m—leaves them vulnerable to injuries in key positions. The potential arrival of Martial at Everton, if completed, would further deplete United’s attacking options, leaving them reliant on Rasmus Højlund and Alejandro Garnacho to deliver consistency.

Liverpool’s £200m+ splurge and the defensive void

Liverpool broke their transfer record twice in 48 hours, first with Bradley Barcola for £120m and then with a reported £100m+ deal for another attacker. Yet the Reds’ business left a gaping hole at the back. The sources confirm Liverpool spent more than £200m in the window, but the squad’s depth remains unproven. The absence of defensive reinforcements—despite the outlay—means Jürgen Klopp’s side could be vulnerable if injuries strike. The question now is whether the new attackers can mask the deficiencies elsewhere.

Liverpool’s spending spree included the £120m acquisition of Barcola, who becomes their record signing, and a reported £100m+ move for another attacker whose identity remains unconfirmed. However, the club’s failure to address defensive concerns—despite selling Ibrahima Konaté for £80m—leaves them exposed. With Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Kostas Tsimikas all carrying injury risks, Klopp may need to reshuffle his backline sooner than expected.

The 48-hour sprint to register European squads

Nine Premier League clubs—including Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Aston Villa—must now submit their European squads by Wednesday night. UEFA’s rules require at least eight “locally trained” players and a maximum of 25 in the first-team list. Aston Villa, fined £19m for breaching squad cost rules, must ensure their net spend is positive to register new signings. The late deals completed on Tuesday now face scrutiny: will all players meet UEFA’s eligibility criteria? The stakes are high, and the margin for error is slim.

Aston Villa’s summer spending exceeded £250m, but their net spend remains positive after recouping over £300m from sales. However, their UEFA fine means they must tread carefully when submitting their squad list. Clubs like Brighton & Hove Albion, competing in the Europa Conference League, face similar challenges, with squad registration now the final hurdle before competitive action resumes.

The Premier League’s summer may be over, but the fallout has only just begun. Clubs now turn their attention to squad registration, fitness tests and the first competitive fixtures. For Arsenal, United and Liverpool, the next 48 hours will determine whether their transfer business translates into on-pitch success—or merely more late-night panic.
